Funding partners recognized for award-winning Valley Line Southeast LRT

April 25, 2025

Valley Line Southeast LRT riders at the Churchill stop will see a new plaque commemorating the LRT line and funding partners involved in the project.
The Valley Line Southeast has provided more than 3.79 million rides since starting service in November 2023. In early April, the Valley Line Southeast project won an Award of Excellence in Project Management and an Award of Merit - Transportation Infrastructure at the 28th annual Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) Showcase Awards Gala.

“It’s great to see how Valley Line Southeast service has been performing, providing a convenient, reliable and accessible transit option for Edmontonians,” says Sarah Feldman, Acting Branch Manager, Edmonton Transit Service. “This LRT line is an important component of our mass transit plan, as we prepare and respond to a growing population in our city. We’re excited about the increase in ridership we’ve experienced since operations started, and look forward to our continued collaboration with TransEd to build on this growth and enhance the rider experience.”

"All of us at TransEd are honoured to have been entrusted with operating and maintaining a world-class LRT system that is transforming public transit in Edmonton," said George Carroll, General and Operations Manager, TransEd Operations and Maintenance Partners. "We look forward to working diligently with the City of Edmonton for years to come to deliver safe, efficient, reliable and sustainable LRT passenger service to Edmontonians.”

“I would like to thank TransEd for delivering a quality LRT project to Edmontonians. TransEd and the City of Edmonton have managed to do what many other construction partnerships are struggling to do worldwide,” said Craig Walbaum, Acting Deputy City Manager, Integrated Infrastructure Services. “The City of Edmonton would also like to thank the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta for their partnership and funding. Together, we completed a large P3 project that will benefit Edmontonians for decades to come.”

Valley Line Southeast total funding was approximately $1.8 billion, made up of the following contributions:
  • Government of Canada: $250 million through the P3 Canada Fund and $150 million through the New Building Canada Fund, Provincial-Territorial Component
  • Government of Alberta: $424,420,000 through the GreenTRIP program and $175,700,000 through the Climate Leadership Plan
  • City of Edmonton: $730 million

Valley Line Southeast is Edmonton’s first low-floor, urban-style LRT. The line spans 13 kilometres from Mill Woods to downtown, and is the first phase of the 27-kilometre Valley Line. The project was delivered through a public-private partnership between the City of Edmonton and TransEd Partners - made up of Bechtel, EllisDon, Alstom and Fengate. Construction began in 2016 and was completed in 2023.

Guided by City Council and Edmontonians’ vision and values through The City Plan, strategic infrastructure projects like the Valley Line Southeast are critical to ensuring Edmonton is preparing for the future as we grow to a city of two million people.
