Charles Morris MBE
Charles Morris MBE

Congratulations to Charles David Owen MORRIS, awarded an MBE in the 2026 New Year Honours List for services to cinema in the north of England.

Charles Morris has been projecting films since he was a teenager living in The Wirral. He pursued a professional engineering career in Blackburn, and continued to work as a part-time projectionist in a number of nearby cinemas. In 1988, along with his late wife Judy, he reopened the derelict Rex Cinema in Elland, near Halifax, which became a great success. In 1992 he gave up his engineering career, and took on the Royalty in Bowness, which he ran until recently. He continued to expand his operations, taking on cinemas in Keighley, Skipton, Lancaster, and Leeds.

In 2006, he rescued the Roxy in Ulverston. The Roxy was in a bad financial way at the time. With the help of programme changes, and enthusiastic staff, the Roxy came back to life. It would now be difficult to imagine Ulverston without Charles and The Roxy.

Mark Latimer, Manager of the Roxy Cinema, said, "Charles has spent a lifetime keeping a number of historic independent cinemas going, not least the Roxy here in Ulverston, so this award is richly deserved".

2026 bay walk dates
of Guide Over Sands Trust

5th January Morecambe Bay Walk bookings open

The Morecambe Bay sands are renowned for their quicksands and fast flowing tides. Crossing the sands has always been dangerous. The Guide over Sands Trust has been guiding people across the bay for 477 years!

In 2026, due to movement of the River Kent channel, the walk programme includes walks to Chapel Island starting from Canal Foot instead of Sandside.

The fee is £15 per person (no adult or child prices).

There is no minimum or maximum age, but please be mindful small children get cold out on the bay as it certainly is a different climate out there, and can be exceptionally hot in the summer months too.

There is a limit 2 dogs per walker and your dogs are your own responsibility. If your dog/dogs run off, we will not stop the walk, and you MUST stay with the walk at all times.

Objects with wheels are not permitted, such as bikes, pushchairs, scooters, or wheelchairs.

Visit the Guide Over Sands website for more information and to download booking forms.
2026 K2B/C2B team registration
K2B/C2B Walks 2026

12pm 5th January online team registration opens

👉 40 miles or 21 — the challenge is yours to choose. From Lakeland climbs to finish line pride, every step matters. This year’s event takes place on Saturday 9th May 2026.

🌄 Conquer the legendary peaks:

  • Dunmail Raise — the first big test
  • Red Bank — short, sharp, and unforgettable
  • Hodge Close — rugged and striking
  • Kirkby Moor — the long progressive ascent that defines grit

👉 Each walker takes part in a team of between 4 and 12 members. Each team nominates up to three charities to receive its sponsorship money, so please consider donating a percentage to small local charities that may find it difficult to organise a team of their own.

⏱ Walkers are tracked at every checkpoint by RFID chip timing, so your team’s progress is recorded step by step. At the finish, every walker receives a medal, an event t-shirt, a printout of their overall time and checkpoint splits, plus two vouchers to exchange for food and drink.

👣 Over 90,000 walkers have faced this route. Will your team be next?

👉 Team Registration opens at noon on Monday 5th January.

Still Life
Drawing & Drawing Confidence

10am 17th January at Swarthmoor Hall

Tickets: Book here

Hello, my name is Chris and I will be your drawing “navigator” for this immersive workshop.

I have been drawing since I was 5 years old, and since I left high school in 1999 I have been using drawing and creativity as my means of living. As a professional commercial artist, over the last 25 years I have drawn myself out of many tight corners, designing graphics for clothing and brands, illustrations for books, posters and adverts, murals for all manner of industries and of course creating and selling my own art work. I would like to share my drawing experience and enthusiasm with you in the hope that after the workshop, a new lease of drawing energy will be yours to enjoy for ever!

If you’re a beginner at making marks and always wanted to start your sketching adventure or you're already on your drawing journey and looking for some extra inspiration, then our 6 hour drawing confidence class is for you!

The workshop will offer a unique experience in which you will explore and refine your skill set, learn to look at objects and figures in a new light, be shown the tricks of the trade, build the necessary confidence to start and finish a drawing, explore form, composition and create a solid foundation for your future drawing projects.

Through one to one and group guidance, you will quickly find that drawing becomes less about the finished piece, andt more about the problem solving aspect of knowing what you want to achieve and the linear style you will inherently already have... you will find it!

Logan Paul Murphy
The Beatles v Elton John

7:30pm 7th February at the Roxy Cinema

Tickets: Book here

At only 19 years of age, Logan Paul Murphy is already making a name for himself in the music industry. It all started just five years ago, when aged only 13, Logan was spotted busking on the streets of Liverpool by the world famous Cavern Club management, and asked to do a set on the famous stage where it all began for The Beatles. He is still the youngest ever person to do a full set in The Cavern to this day.

Following this, Logan has been invited to play at the prestigious International Beatleweek in Liverpool for the last four years running, and is a firm audience favourite. Aged 15, Logan auditioned on Britain’s Got Talent, making it all the way, playing at The London Palladium where he received four yeses from the celebrity judges and a standing ovation from the capacity audience.

Logan featured on the latest series of the popular Channel 4 series The Piano, playing “Piano Man” by Billy Joel. He was joined on the piano by celebrity judges Mika and Lang Lang at Lime Street Station in Liverpool. Logan has a strong worldwide online following, including many celebrities, and has recently released his debut original album “Yet To Fly”.

Logan’s new theatre show, The Beatles v Elton John (with a little help from their friends), is selling out in theatres around the UK, including the world famous Cavern Club Liverpool. A fully live one man songbook show: One Piano, One Guitar, One Hell of a Voice!! Logan is well known for his superb shows, and this one is sure to be one to remember and not to be missed.

“Since discovering Logan busking outside the Cavern at thirteen, his development as an artist has been remarkable. He is now firmly established at our prestigious annual International Beatleweek festival and makes regular special guest appearances at the Cavern Club.” ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Jon Keats, Director – Music & Events, THE CAVERN CLUB.
