Hello and welcome to Great British Podcasts from Podcast Rex. We're available every week because of your support, please become a member for just £3.99/month.
And hello from the Alps, where I’m sending the newsletter this week ⛷️⛷️⛷️

Some new developments in podcasting to let you know about. Firstly, The Sports Agents is launching from Global. This spin-off will undoubtedly have the same feel and immediacy as its heavyweight and successful sibling, and will likely be essential in a busy year with Olympics, Paralympics and Euros on the agenda. The podcast will also be presented by two heavyweights from the world of sports presenting and commentary: Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman. Episodes will be twice a week and will launch later in the Spring.

Meanwhile, an already established podcast is having a change in its distribution strategy as of this week. The British Podcast Award winning Elis James and John Robins will now be out every Tuesday, followed by a second release on a Friday, a shortened version of which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live. I guess this means for them that they can have the reach of radio with the intimacy of podcasting. Plus it will also mean that breaking news won’t derail the show at a moment’s notice.

And speaking of rebirths, there’s a new BBC Radio 4 podcast out this week looking at the very first moments of life, from fertilisation to birth, called Child. It is presented by India Rakusen, who was behind the British Podcast Award winning 28ish Days Later. She’s also the executive producer of the hugely successful Can I Tell You A Secret?, which was made with The Guardian’s Sirin Kale. Episodes of this new series are only 15 minutes each.

And Can I Tell You A Secret? has also been remade into a Netflix docuseries. The series on cyberstalking is a two-parter and will be out on the 21st February.

Undercover: The Spycops
An absorbing and engrossing series looking at undercover policing, its ethics and the long term emotional and mental health impact that being lied and manipulated can cause to those involved.

Presented by Andy Whittaker, it looks at ‘Mark Stone,’ who over a period of seven years infiltrated a network of left wing climate activists who had planned to shut down a power station in Nottingham. And part of his undercover work, Stone had multiple intimate relationships with several people in the network, who did not know his true identity. This sensitively handled series looks at the implications and consequences.

Joel Golby’s Book Club
“Hello, I’m Joel Golby and this is my book club, so welcome to Joel Golby’s book club.” The Guardian TV columnist and author of Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant has now launched a new podcast where he recommends a book and then reads out an extract from that book, with a bit of his trademark wry humour. It’s a simple format that can be traced back to his book recommendations on Instagram and each episode lasts for a zippy twenty minutes. Handy. New episodes on Tuesdays.

The Tax Factor
I know what you’re thinking: TAX! How can there be an interesting podcast about tax? Yet, this podcast from the accounting firm Blick Rothenberg has managed to do so, because they are very helpful and very clear in explaining and breaking down various tax issues, from self assessment, to record keeping and payroll. Sorting out your finances can be some of the most time consuming and frustrating things to do in any creative pursuit, so it is helpful to know what changes are on the way.
