Hello and welcome to Great British Podcasts from Podcast Rex
A new podcast festival is taking place in Sheffield on the late May Bank Holiday, with a lot of well-known podcasters already signed up.

Crossed Wires: The Podcast Festival will feature live shows including NewlyWeds (Sophie Habboo and Jamie Laing), Brown Girls Do It Too (Rubina Pabani and Poppy Jay), The Adam Buxton Show (with special guests Self Esteem) and Wolf and Owl (Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis).

The festival has been put together by Alice Levine (one of the trio behind My Dad Wrote A Porno), Dino Sofos (behind The News Agents, Political Currency and News Cast) and James O’Hara (founder of Tramlines).

For tickets, just had to CrossedWires.Live.

In other news, it has not been a great week for the Royal Family. Podcasts have been reflecting on the photoshop disaster, with When It Hits The Fan releasing an episode on how Royal Family communications need to be overhauled for the modern age. Pod Save The King features experts Ann Gripper and Zoe Forsey on the unprecedented move by Kensington Palace to speak out on the wild rumours, whilst the review podcast Paper Cuts featured Alex von Tunzelmann, The Bunker host Jacob Jarvis and comedian Gráinne Maguire reflecting on the newspaper coverage.

Discover your Inner Astronaut
What do you do after you’ve gone to space? Launch a podcast, of course. This new Audible podcast features retired astronauts Nicole Stott and Helen Sharman (the first British person to go to space) exploring how much of the training they received for their space missions can be applied to our own lives back on Earth.

That might sound a little bit abstract, but it actually makes a lot of sense when you realise that their training consisted of how to deal with loneliness, how to avoid panic when things go wrong and the importance of scheduling time to rest. There’s lots of practical tips and advice in three thirty minute episodes. It is also really rather inspiring to hear Stott and Sharman talk about how going to space changed their perspective and attitudes towards life too.

The Rest Is History: The Titanic
Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland, two of the most popular and critically acclaimed historians in podcasting, have just launched a fascinating six part series (that’s six hours!) exploring the sinking of the Titanic from a multitude of different angles.

From the background and events leading up to the disaster, to how the sinking reflected issues at the time, such as immigration, class, the decline of the Gilded Age and the shift of global power from Britain to America. The first couple of episodes are available to watch, with early access to additional episodes available to paid Rest Is History subscribers.

Your Next Podcast
By following Your Next Podcast every week you'll have a brand new show ready to listen to without doing any work. That's what the host Lauren Layfield does.

This week it's Dissident at the Doorstep. What happens when someone becomes a human-rights icon – but then turns out to stand for something else entirely? Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng was locked up for fighting against China’s One Child Policy and suffered years of unlawful imprisonment. In 2012, following a daring midnight escape, he landed in the United States a hero. Just a few years later, he would re-enter the spotlight as an avid Trump supporter and a “Stop the Steal” rally-goer. How did this happen?

Miss Me?
From the makers of Political Currency  comes this interesting new concept on BBC Sounds. In each episode, close friends Miquita Oliver and Lily Allen reflect on the latest developments in news and pop culture, but from different radio studios in London and New York (as Lily Allen now likes in Brooklyn.) Both hosts are experts on celebrity and popular culture, having both worked in the industry for the past two decades.

Two episodes are out each week, with a ‘meaty’ edition every Thursday, the first of which looks at whether award ceremonies are better events in the US than they are in the UK.

Mission Responsible
A podcast exploring how engineering can help solve some of the biggest problems facing humanity today. Put together by the engineering company DesignSpark, in each episode physicist Dr Simon Clark and mechanical engineer Dr Shini Somara explore the technologies helping to clear up our CO2 emissions and innovations helping to reduce noise pollution.

The presenters are the draw here, able to explain and break down complex scientific issues in layman's terms, without sounding patronising either.
Thank you as always for reading (and listening), we’ll be back next Sunday with another newsletter.
