Hello and welcome to Great British Podcasts from Podcast Rex
If you have ever asked yourself ‘How Big Is Joe Rogan?’ then this is the newsletter for you. New podcast audience research this week from Edison reveals (*gasp*) that Joe’s show - The Joe Rogan Experience - has the largest audience in the UK and - in fact - has not budged since the last time that the survey was carried out.

(In case you were wondering, #2 on the list is The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett and #3 is Sh*gged, Married Annoyed. The Archers comes in at #20. We at Podcast Rex say: ‘Ambridge Forever.’

BUT - the folks at Bloomberg decided to do a bit of investigating into how many listeners Joe Rogan might actually have. They added his 14.5 million followers from a new Spotify gizmo (Rogan’s podcast has been available exclusively through Spotify, since 2020) to Rogan’s 18.9 million instagram followers and then made sure to include the 16.4 million subscribers to his YouTube channel. And they came up with, well,  an absolutely eye watering total. We are not sure The Grundys can compete. (IYKYK)
What we've been listening to this week:
  • Richard Curtis is on Tony Robinson’s Cunningcast talking all things Blackadder.
  • Rugby players Louis Rees-Zammit, Sam Warburton and Courtney Lawes are on The Sports Agents.
  • The Traitors’ Jaz Singh is on It Can’t Just Be Me talking about family betrayal.
  • MISS ME? Lifelong chums Lily Allen and Miquita Oliver catch up twice a week - from either side of the Atlantic - to chat about life, love and everything (including puppies, boys from the 90s and holiday meltdowns.)
  • Nicole Scherzinger is on How to Fail with Elizabeth Day, who herself joins Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett on Dish.

53 Minutes
This new pod from comedians Josh Widdicombe and Dara O’Brien sets out to cover the 53 minute career of Ali Dia. A chancer who worked his way into Southampton’s Premier League squad by pretending to be the cousin of genuine superstar George Weah, Dia’s singular appearance is dubbed “football’s biggest mystery” by the show.

Over the course of six episodes, Widdicombe and O’Briain are due to spend significantly longer pondering Dia’s career than he ever spent on a Premier League pitch.

We Can Do Hard Things
This week the trio that is Glennon, Abby and Amanda, do the hardest thing of all… and look for hope in the Middle East. Their guests on the show are both peace activists - one is Palestinian and one is Israeli. Sally Abed & Alon-Lee Green - both from the organisation ‘Standing Together’ explain the history of the area, tell their own tales of growing up in the region and give opportunities to help in their mission to bring peace. It talks a lot about what role they think the American government should play in the conflict  - as this show is produced in the States.. But there is real value in their personal perspectives on the situation. A totally worthwhile listen

The Butterfly King
The latest offering from Blanchard House and follows a trail of dissidents, poisoners and soldiers to find out who killed King Boris III of Bulgaria.   It’s a masterfully told WW2 tale of family drama, political intrigue and pure treachery.. Which is a bit like the The Crown crossed with Sherlock Holmes. It also does a wonderful job of explaining why this tiny country in southern Europe was so important and why everyone from the Nazis to the Soviets wanted a piece of the pie.. And it is full of palaces and poisonings.  Please leave us alone to binge in peace.

Black Box
An essential podcast to help us stop and take stock of just what we’re doing with technology. Only in the past two years has AI really exploded from a niche field of interest into a global phenomenon aiming to change the way we work, consume and live, and we haven’t taken much time to ask whether or not that’s actually a good thing.

In Black Box, the Guardian’s Michael Safi speaks to researchers behind some of this technology to try and uncover what exactly is in the “black box” - the driving force behind AI applications that obscures authorship and eliminates attribution.
Thank you as always for reading (and listening), we’ll be back next Sunday with another newsletter.
