Let’s start with political podcasts that have launched interesting mini series recently.
Who Killed Liz Truss? Countdown to Calamity is a deep dive into the financial crisis and the economic impact during Liz Truss’ premiership. Presented by The Rest is Money’s Robert Peston and Steph McGovern, the series will look at what they did, how they were allowed to do it and its lingering impact.
“This was not just a financial crisis, this was a constitutional crisis,” says Peston. “And weirdly, it has been totally underreported. The country has moved on.”
Meanwhile, Political Currency, the politics podcast fronted by George Osborne and Ed Ball, has launched a new series called Inside The Room: The Brexit Plots. The three-parter explores what happened behind the scenes in the weeks and days leading up to the referendum, rather than discussing Brexit itself. Michael Gove is joining them for all three episodes with insight and tidbits.
Finally, What Happened to Nelson Mandela’s South Africa?, by the academia themed podcast The Conversation is to unpack the last thirty years of post-apartheid South Africa and its transition towards democracy. “Thirty years on, the country is in a political and economic crisis and many have been left questioning their choices of the past three decades,” says host Thabo Leshilo.
In other news … the podcast Movers and Shakers, which connects and educates people connected to Parkinson’s, went to Downing Street earlier this week as part of their campaign to improve care. They have launched ‘the Parky charter,’ with aims to improve specialist care, access to free prescriptions and comprehensive access to physio, speech therapists and health professionals and more money into scientific research. |

A new six-part series exploring the contentious sinking of the Argentine ship General Belgrano in May 1982. The sinking, which was caused by torpedoes fired by a British submarine in the Falklands War, resulted in the deaths of 323 men on board.
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher claimed that the sinking was a matter of self-defence, but as this series by London Review of Books explores, it was then claimed that the ship was actually leaving the area at the time and did not pose an immediate threat. This informative series looks at what happened, from the conspiracies to the whistleblowers who helped expose the truth.

To mark 50 years since ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest, catapulting the band to global stardom, BBC Radio 2 has launched a lovely deep dive into the history of the band, using a mixture of archives from deep within the BBC’s vaults.
It’s a well crafted listen and very much for the fans, but the series is still accessible if you only have a passing interest. The narration by Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox is also a delight.
