May 17, 2022 at 1:30 pm
This month we will hear from Shanon Quinn, Director of Child Nutrition at Cave Creek Unified District. Shanon and her nutrition services team continuously aim to make school meals as interesting and appealing as possible for their students. They have done so by implementing creative meal options such as “Chipotle-Inspired Burrito Bowl” and “Build Your Own Sandwich” meal service lines. Additionally, they regularly feature new, fresh ingredients that keep students coming back for more! Shanon will speak on how to utilize these innovative meal options and other inventive tactics to generate excitement for summer meal service and attract participants to summer meal sites. Join us to learn more about these strategies and be inspired by Shanon and her team!

What was your first job in food service?
During High School, I worked at Pelican Point, a restaurant in Paradise Valley Mall.

What prompted you to start working in the field of school nutrition?
I took a nutrition class at Paradise Valley Community College and loved it. From there I went on to the University of Arizona to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition.

Tell us about a specific project or initiative you have championed that you are proud of.
This year I planned to have a BBQ fun day at every school. We have a district BBQ trailer that can be used for grilling and preparing delicious meals. Since our district was able to welcome visitors back on our campus this year for lunch, the BBQ day created a joyous atmosphere that we have missed since 2020. Not only was this a great idea to bring people back together, the event also increased revenue.

Assuming time and money were not barriers, what would be your top priority as far as changes you would like to see in your school nutrition program?
I would increase salaries for the staff and continue free meals for all students.

What are the top three skills a school food service director should have?
Adaptability, being budget conscious, and being able to multitask.

What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself just starting in your role as a director?
Remember everything you do is for the students. The students will remember how they were treated long after they leave school.
Cave Creek Unified District students enjoy a homemade comfort classic!

Students at Cave Creek Unified District enjoyed a comfort meal consisting of baked ziti with meat sauce and warm cinnamon apples! The entree and yummy side were served alongside cooked broccoli, and milk! This sounds like a delicious meal with items straight from home!

Research Rundown

This month's Research Rundown article tested whether non-nutrition related fun facts about fruits and vegetables increased their consumption among intervention schools. This article discusses the impact that effective and amusing marketing can have on children's willingness to eat or try foods they are apprehensive toward. The information can be used to help you find creative ways to increase your students' exposure to and inclination toward fruits and vegetables in your meal programs!
Together, we can influence positive
dietary behaviors in students!
