Charlene and Baby Charlene
We love sharing stories of how God is using us, and the donations we receive for His glory!

Your donation to Radical Missions helps impact lives directly on the ground here in Guatemala. Here is just one of the many stories we love to share.

Otilia, 7 months pregnant, stopped by the Clinica Colfax in Chuatzunuj, Tecpan with severe pelvic pain. She stated, "I feel like the baby is going to fall out."

Otilia had miscarried in the past and was worried that she would lose another baby. Her blood pressure and heart rate were elevated. And the baby's fetal heart rate was extremely low.

Nurse Charlene, an American RN, and Nurse Pedro, a Guatemalan RN, decided that the patient needed to go to the hospital in Tecpan. But when Otilia went to the hospital with her husband that day, the hospital denied admittance and sent her home.

Otilia said, "They gave me something to drink." Otilia returned from the hospital that day with a prescription for Iron and bed rest. We had iron supplements in the pharmacy to give to her and sent her home to rest.
Two months later, Nurse Pedro received word of another house call in the village of Chuatzunuj. The patient was Otilia, now 9 months pregnant with her 9th child.

Nurse Charlene took the call and went down to check Otilia with Nurse Pedro. Otilia's blood pressure and heart rate were elevated, and she also had a low grade fever.

She had been leaking water for three days and the baby was breached.
The hospital had turned her away, saying she was not ready. So Nurse Pedro called the Health Department in Tecpan to ask for help.

Dr Joel runs the Health Department in the area of Tecpan and also backs the Clinica Colfax. He asked Nurse Pedro to bring Otilia to him so he could check her. If he felt that she needed to go to the hospital, Dr Joel would write a letter to have her admitted.

Jeff from God Said Go, and Nurse Pedro drove Otilia to Dr Joel's in Tecpan. After Dr Joel checked Otilia, he demanded that the hospital accept Otilia for an emergency c-section. Jeff and Nurse Pedro drove Otilia to the hospital.
We did not hear any news until the following week.

Otilia had been released from the hospital and both her and the baby were healthy. Otilia named the baby girl after Nurse Charlene in honor of her saving the lives of both the mom and the baby.
This is just one of the many stories about the impact the Clinica Colfax has had on these 12 villages in the mountains of Tecpan. We are blessed to be able to work together with incredible ministries such as God Said Go, and Light into Darkness, just to name a few, to make a difference in people's lives...
