Editor's Note

Welcome to a new season of Compensation and Staffing News especially to our many new subscribers! There's a lot going on in the coming months for the Office of Church Staff Finances and we're glad you're on the journey with us.

To launch the '22-'23 program year, our newsletter has a new look. Much gratitude to Retirement Plan Director Gloria Guldager for creating the beautiful Church Staff Finances logo above. The life preserver depicts the four areas of our office, clockwise from the top: Insurance Plans, Retirement Plan, Aid Funds, and Compensation (and Staffing).

In the months ahead, you'll find articles authored by various members of our team as well as guest contributors. We might invite you to take a questionnaire or two. As always, we'll equip you for excellence as an employer by providing useful resources and keeping you abreast of changes happening within our programs and services.

Finally, because some truths transcend color palette adjustments and seasonal changes, this newsletter will continue to feature formatting quirks in certain browsers and platforms. Thanks for your forbearance!

Faithfully,
Jan Gartner, Compensation and Staffing Practices Manager

Rethinking UUA Salary Recommendations

Last month, the Compensation Team presented a webinar reviewing the history of the UUA Compensation Program, exploring important compensation-related concepts, describing challenges with our current methodology, and outlining changes planned for the '23-'24 program year (with materials to be published in November '22). More than 300 congregational leaders and employees joined us over the course of our 10 presentations.

If you weren't able to attend, or if you want to review the recording or simply read a few highlights, visit our Rethinking UUA Salary Recommendations page.

Got New Staff?

From Sean Griffin, Compensation and Benefits Specialist
Are you in search for a new staff member? Or perhaps you hired someone new over the summer? Our Hiring Staff page provides guidance on attracting and hiring great staff, including a downloadable, customizable Welcoming and Onboarding Checklist (Excel).

As a reminder, it's important to let your new (and not new) staff know about their benefits eligibility and applicable enrollment windows. Remember that if your congregation participates in the UU Retirement Plan, every employee (age 18 or older), regardless of hours, must be informed that they can enroll upon hire or anytime thereafter for the purpose of making pre-tax contributions via salary deferral.

Guardian Group Insurance Rates for 2023

We have confirmed that rates for all of our Guardian Plans (Dental, Life, and Long-Term Disability) will remain unchanged for 2023. We hope this knowledge helps you with mid-program-year budgeting as well as early planning for the '23-'24 program year.

It's too early for us to provide information about UUA Health Plan rates for 2023, but a base increase and age adjustments (because we all get older each year) are anticipated. Stay tuned for more information in October.

Open Enrollment for our Health and Dental Plans takes place in November. There is no open enrollment for Life or Long-Term Disability insurance.
