20 October 2022
Dear colleague,

For this academic year only, there is an overlap between the final assessments of the legacy BTEC Tech Awards (2017), final year of Performance Tables for several BTEC First Awards, and the first teach of the new BTEC Tech Awards (2022).

We have noticed that some centres may have registered learners for the incorrect qualifications based on the learners' anticipated year of completion. To ensure your learners are registered to complete the correct qualification, please urgently review the following guidance.

Please note the registration deadline of 1 November, after which late fees will be applicable.

Once you have read this message, please let us know using this form. If you have previously received this message and taken necessary action, please disregard this reminder.
|  If you are yet to make registrations

Please speak with the teaching staff to confirm that the correct qualifications are being delivered as follows:

  • BTEC Tech Awards learners who will be completing in 2024 or later must be registered on the new BTEC Tech Awards (2022), as the legacy BTEC Tech Awards (2017) will no longer be available after summer 2023*.
  • BTEC Tech Awards learners who will be completing in summer 2023 must be registered on the legacy BTEC Tech Awards (2017), as the new Tech Awards are not available for external assessment or certification until 2024.
  • BTEC First Awards will no longer be on performance tables after summer 2023, so learners completing in 2024 or later must be registered on the new Tech Awards (2022) if they wish to be recorded on performance tables. However, if you do not need your achievement to be included in performance tables, they can remain on First Awards for completion beyond 2023.
  • BTEC First Awards learners who will be completing in summer 2023 may continue on these qualifications and will be recorded on 2023 performance tables.
*The legacy BTEC Tech Award in Engineering (2017) has been extended to 2026 so you can continue to offer it. However, please note that this will not be included on 2024 KS4 performance tables.

When making registrations for the new BTEC Tech Award (2022), please ensure you are using the correct registration codes, listed here:

|  If you have already made registrations

Please confirm with teaching staff that the correct qualifications are being delivered, then urgently check that you have registered your learners for the correct qualification. Refer to the registration codes for the new BTEC Tech Awards (2022) in the table above.

If you discover that you have made registrations for the legacy BTEC Tech Awards (2017) or BTEC First Awards in error and need to change them to new BTEC Tech Awards (2022), please refer to the following instructions.
|  How do I check my registrations?
If you’re not sure which Tech Award qualification you have registered your learners for, you can check on Edexcel Online.

The BTEC Tech Awards (2022) are listed at the bottom of the qualification selection menu. You can access the legacy BTEC Tech Awards (2017) via the existing BTEC menu option, then you can choose to search by course or by candidate.
|  Instructions for deleting and re-registering for the correct Tech Award qualification:

If you have registered on the BTEC Tech Awards (2017) in error and need to change these to the new 2022 versions, you will first need to delete the registrations you have already made.

You can find detailed instructions on deleting BTEC registrations in this support article. You will receive a credit note for the deletions of 2022/23 registrations if these are processed by 31 January 2023.
|  EDI registrations

The quickest and easiest way to register your learners is via EDI. Unlike the legacy BTEC Tech Awards (2017), which had centre-specific programme codes, the new 2022 versions now have generic codes (see the table above).

This means that the 9B basedata, along with the basedata for January 2023 internally assessed units, is available on our qualifications website rather than on Edexcel online. Look for ‘BTEC Tech Awards - September 2022 registration basedata (9B)’.
|  Registrations via Edexcel Online

If you are making your registrations via Edexcel Online, you can do this for individual learners or in bulk using our spreadsheet method. You can find detailed step-by-step guidance on making registrations in this support article

Remember, the BTEC Tech Awards (2022) are listed at the bottom of the qualification selection menu.
