Year-End Reminders

Open Enrollment
As noted last month, Open Enrollment 2023 runs through December 15. Please send a reminder to your eligible staff (scheduled to work 750+ hours/year) during this busy season. This is the one time of year when all eligible staff can enroll themselves and their dependents in the UUA Health and Dental Plans.

Law Changes for 2023
The Church Staff Finances team does our best to follow federal payroll law. Although we can't track the many state-level differences, we can tell you a few things to check for:
  • Is your state or locality changing their minimum wage in 2023?
  • Has your state adjusted their exempt employee salary threshold?
  • Is your state introducing, or has it made changes to, their paid family leave program?(Churches are exempt from paid family leave in some states and included in others.)
  • Does your state or locality have pay transparency laws (requiring employers to provide salary ranges to job candidates) or salary history bans (outlawing pay history questions)?
Ministerial Housing Allowance
The Ministerial Housing Allowance must be formally designated by the congregation's leadership before any expenses can be applied to it. Designating a 2023 housing allowance before the end of 2022 ensures that your minister(s) can take full advantage of it in the new calendar year.

Practical Skills Training for UU Professionals Who Supervise

We're happy to announce that the UUA is partnering with The Management Center to provide practical, interculturally informed management skills training to UU professionals who supervise in congregations.

Many staff supervisors at the UUA have taken and appreciated TMC's trainings, and several of us have had the pleasure of getting to know JK Nelson, who will be leading two separate two-day online sessions of Managing to Change the World:
  • Session One: Thursday and Friday, January 19-20, from 9a to 3p PT/12p to 6p ET

We have space for 40 people in each session. Please pass along this opportunity to your UU staff in supervisory roles promptly!

Supervisors, we encourage you to apply if...
  • You directly supervise staff in a UU congregation or related organization
  • You're eager to learn new tools , frameworks, and practices to support your management
  • You're open to thinking critically and newly about your individual and organizational practices on managing with an equity and inclusion lens
  • You are committed to an ethos of shared ministry

What About That Compensation and Staffing Survey?

350 congregations participated in our Compensation and Staffing Survey back in May and June. Once again, thanks to all who took the time to send responses!

Our primary objective was to get a sense of actual congregational staff salaries relative to our current ('22-'23) recommendations. The data informed our approach to the new Congregational Salary Program, in part by confirming that taken collectively, actual median salaries fall close to our recommended midpoints. We did some deeper diving into the responses to reach more specific conclusions about particular positions and sizes that also influenced the new recommendations.

With the new Salary Program launched, we've turned our attention to creating a report about the survey results. It's one thing to analyze the data for our own purposes, but quite another to share information and learnings in a way that will be clear, meaningful, and useful to a broader audience. Thanks for your patience as we continue to tinker with tables and takeaways!

Two Reminders from the Retirement Plan Team

Employer Participation Agreement Changes
If your organization was planning to make any changes to your Retirement Plan elections for the upcoming Plan year (begins January 1), please submit your amended Employer Participation Agreement to retirementplan@uua.org by December 15th to make sure they can be processed for the January 1 implementation.

Primary Contact Survey
If you have not already done so, please respond to the email request to submit a Primary Contact for Empower, our soon-to-be recordkeeper. We will be reaching out to Primary Contacts in early January with information regarding the new remittance process and scheduling training.
