DIRECTOR’S HELLO
Happy 2023 from all of us at CAI. Thanks to you we are heading into a new year filled with promise. As we look back at 2022, we can all be proud of what the CAI Founders Circle made possible. You helped us: air multiple breaking news stories, such as the South American migrants' arrival and then the bank robbery on Martha’s Vineyard. You also helped us amplify diminished voices, such as hearing from Wampanoag artists and welcoming them to share their work and stories on The Point. You also helped us deliver art and science programs that inform and enrich our lives like The Moth and Hidden Brain.

To thank you, we will show our appreciation in
multiple ways through the coming months. We will continue to offer this newsletter as a quarterly insider’s view of the station. You also can look forward to special CAI experiences and other perks such as tours, tickets, books, as well as meet and greets that match your interests. And 2023 now feels like the right time for us to provide more opportunities to come together to volunteer for the station and get involved.

So, as we look back with gratitude, we also look forward – with enthusiasm – to delivering the Cape and Islands community public radio that you have come to know and love, and to thanking you for being such a special part of it.
Cheers to the New Year,
Patricia Marie Peal

Info to enhance your listening experience
CAI Podcasts Available On Demand
Another way to personalize your CAI experience when you can’t listen to us on the radio is to listen through the Apple Podcast or Stitcher app. CAI Digital Producer Liz Lerner publishes weekly fan favorite shows — Cape Cod Notebook, Weekly Bird Report, and Local Food Report — as unique podcasts right after the shows air. The Point is updated daily and published the same day by editors Jenny Junker and Dan Tritle. A full list of shows available as podcasts is on our website here.

So, if you miss it on broadcast you can listen to the podcast when it is convenient for you. Subscribing to the podcast means the latest episode will be ready for you when you can get to it. It also means you can binge a couple of episodes while taking a walk or just relaxing. Enjoy!
NPR Challenge for Your Children and Grandchildren
The fifth annual NPR Student Podcast Challenge, with categories for grades 5–8 and 9–12, is accepting applications. The deadline for entries is April 28, 2023. This opportunity has introduced more than 40,000 students to the world of audio storytelling and public radio. We have seen so many different topics covered in these entries relevant to student experiences and look forward to seeing new stories brought to life in this year’s challenge. Not to be left out, entries for college podcasters will open Friday, September 1, 2023 and close on December 31, 2023. If you know a middle or high school student that you would like to encourage, send them this link: https://www.npr.org/series/662609200/npr-student-podcast-challenge. Questions from parents and educators can be emailed to studentpodcastchallenge@npr.org.
FC APPLAUSE
Founders Circle members and staff in our communities
Former Morning Edition host Kathryn Eident is off on a new adventure with the Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC). After reporting about the housing crisis on Cape Cod for many years, she is now on the front lines trying to raise awareness about the issue in her new position as Director of Marketing and Communications. Everyone at CAI applauds her for focusing on an issue near and dear to her, and we wish her well.

As the CAI News Team continues to report on the pressing matter of housing, we are also not immune to the issue, as it does affect our current and future staff members. We applaud the listeners who have reached out to help us along the way to help find housing for staff many times over the last 22 years.  If it weren’t for you, some of our favorite and familiar radio voices would not be with us today.

How CAI shared universal topics with a local flair in 2022
How does our public affairs show The Point choose books & authors to interview? This is the most-asked question of Mindy Todd and Amy Vince, who both host and produce the show. Their answer:
“We generally look for book topics like these:
1) histories that give us new perspectives, or never told stories
2) ideas, practices and policies that foster racial equity and social justice
3) science and technology written for the layperson”

Authors and subjects with ties to the Cape and Islands are always a local favorite, like the ones listed and linked below from 2022. Check out some of the local tie-ins.
