Access to clean water in Guatemala is a significant challenge, particularly in rural areas, where contaminated water sources are the norm. According to a report by the World Bank, in 2015, only 62% of the population in Guatemala had access to safe drinking water sources, such as piped water systems, protected wells, or springs. In rural areas, the numbers are worse, with just 34% of the population having access to safe water.
The problem
In Guatemala, available drinking water can have high contamination levels. People often use firewood to boil the water in order to purify it, leading to deforestation in the country, dangers from carbon monoxide poisoning and emitting pollutants that contribute to climate change.
The solution
With the help of community leaders, Radical Missions identifies households in rural Tecpan and Patzun and provide them with an EcoFilter at no charge. We ensure long term success by getting each household to 'buy-in' by contributing a small fee of $1 per month to pay for a replacement cartridge every two years.

Good Health and Well-being: The water filter uses a gravity-fed ceramic cartridge made of clay, sawdust, colloidal silver and carbon to treat two litres of non-potable water per hour. It removes 99% of pathogens, making it safer for drinking and cooking by reducing water-borne disease and also reduces the need for fuelwood, consequently decreasing indoor air pollution. The distributed improved cookstove burn biomass fuel cleanly and efficiently which contributes to a reduction of indoor air pollution that families, particularly women, are exposed to.(https://ecofiltro.com.gt/en) |

Helping the planet
The climate change impact of an Ecofiltro is less than one percent of the impact of consuming the same amount of bottled water, and 35% of the impact of boiled water.
Helping people
The urban poor benefit from this activity with savings on clean water and improved health. They usually have to buy bottled water in the city where they live and work. Their children often get sick because they drink water from a municipal source which is often contaminated and their weak immune systems cannot fight a bacterial infection, which 80% of the time is water related. With the subsidized price of an Ecofiltro, the urban poor save 90% of what they were paying before on water and they drink more water and obtain better health. |

Scaling Up
In order to assure post delivery service and long-term sustainability, Radical Missions has strong connections with the local community leaders through regular phone calls and community visits. There are 12 villages that surround the Clinica Colfax. Our prayer is to put an EcoFilter in each home to provide clean drinking water to every family that the clinic serves. |
