A MESSAGE FROM STEVE JUNKER
Dear Founders Circle,

As News Director for CAI Public Radio, I have the pleasure of working with talented journalists to create and curate the local reporting you hear every day.

Perhaps our hardest job is deciding which stories to cover with our small-but-mighty newsroom. Based on recent audience feedback you appreciate our reporting on matters like Offshore Wind, Radioactive Water, Bridge Re-Construction and Shark Awareness.

Summer is such a great time in our region. It is also awards season, when our team at CAI receives a well-deserved pat on the back for their work. This year, I’m honored to report that we have received 12 awards for excellence from both the Edward R. Murrow Awards and the Public Media Journalists Association.

Thank you, and please pat yourself on the back for being a Founders Circle patron and supporting excellence. Our work simply could not rise to this level of notoriety without your generosity.

Enjoy all the Cape, Coast and Islands has to offer this season, including CAI Public Radio. Listen, on the radio or online, to our award-winning newscasts and features all summer long and beyond. Thank you again for all that you help make possible.

Happy Summer,
Steve Junker, Managing Editor for News, Host/Producer Local News Roundup, Host/Producer, The Fishing News

Summer Reading Recommendations
Based on the amount of feedback from our monthly book discovery shows and author interviews on The Point, we surmise that our listeners are also readers. Listen to our July 26 episode of The Point when local librarians will be making good beach read recommendations. Attend a virtual Beach Read, or grab your favorite NPR host’s latest novel or memoir. You can also check out last month’s Nantucket Book Festival reading list, or make plans to attend the Martha’s Vineyard or Provincetown Book Festivals. If you are looking for local authors with ties to the Cape, we recommend following the Cape Cod Writers Center conference.

Scott Detrow Joins Weekend All Things Considered
On June 24, Scott Detrow became a weekend host for All Things Considered as well as a podcast host for Consider This. “I can't wait to collaborate with the ATC team every day. With a presidential election already underway, there will be a lot of political news to cover. But I'm also really looking forward to branching out into other areas, including the cultural, musical, and sports news that listeners look for on the weekends."
BBC program replaces The Takeaway
OS, short for Outside Source, from Radio BBC is now airing weekdays 12-1 PM in the time slot previously held by The Takeaway. The show delivers a vibrant account of the day’s events, with explanation and reaction from those involved. As part of the BBC News World Service, OS is heard around the world, taking the day’s top news stories, and providing impartial news reports and analysis in English and 40 other languages.

Kudos to the CAI news team, which has been recognized nationally for being a leader in local news and culture. News Director Steve Junker attended the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA) annual conference June 21 to 23 and brought home seven awards. Add that to the record five Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) announced in May and CAI has won twelve awards this year. Among the most prestigious in news, the Edward R. Murrow Awards recognize local and national news stories that uphold the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrate technical expertise and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the public. Congratulations to Steve and the whole newsroom!

Tune in for Hikes We Like, a new local feature that highlights both treasured and lesser-known outdoor experiences in our region. Check it out on Sundays 8:35 AM and Mondays during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
In addition, All Things Considered host, John Basile, has created a local music program just for us, airing on Sunday nights at 9 PM called Sittin' In. Some may be familiar with this, as it used to be a segment of John’s afternoon programs once a month. Now Sittin’ In has been expanded to a weekly summer series of programs that delve into local musical history and feature musicians from a range of styles and backgrounds. Dan Tritle will produce.

And of course don’t miss The Fishing News with Steve Junker, on Fridays and Saturdays, back for another summer season to help us better understand our local waters and the fish that swim in them.
