Guide to Setting Terms of Employment for Non-Clergy

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association (UUMA) collaborate to provide a model employment agreement for ministers. We've had many requests from staff and lay leaders over the years to create a similar document for other staff. But because of legal distinctions between ministers and other employees, as well as a variety of differences from state to state, our legal counsel advised against us providing a parallel template for non-clergy. Yet we recognized the importance of improved support for all hires.

So, last fall, we introduced a resource to help ensure a solid foundation for any new employee. It's not an employment agreement template, but we like it even better. Because it came out in the same month as our revised Congregational Salary Program, it does not appear to have gotten the attention it deserves. This seems like a good time to lift it up as summer is often a time when new staff are hired and onboarded. The Guide contains the following sections:
  • Confirm the Basics
  • Administrative Onboarding
  • General Benefits Onboarding Information (and see Addendum)
  • Personnel Policies
  • Professional Development
  • Additional Considerations: warm welcome, intellectual property, letter of hire
  • Special situations: remote employees, staff shared with other congregations
  • Addendum: UUA Benefits Onboarding
Please check it out (link at button below), make use of it when hiring, and send us feedback!

Compensation Consultants

UUA Compensation Consultants are trained volunteers who work under the direction of the Office of Church Staff Finances. They assist congregational leaders in understanding UUA Compensation Standards and in navigating the complexity of ministerial and staff compensation, benefits, and employment agreements.

Compensation Consultants are regionally based and generally cover an assigned geographic area within their region. Sometimes they work across coverage areas, and even across regions, to help each other out and to fill gaps. Consultations generally take place via teleconference.

Please make use of your Compensation Consultant for questions related to staff compensation. Note that congregational staff with concerns about their own compensation should contact the Compensation Team directly at Comp@uua.org.
