Why are women under-represented in the music industry? Are women undervalued? How do women navigate the challenges of the sector? These are some of the questions to be discussed with women who are leaders in the South African music sector.
Concerts SA, in partnership with SAMRO and Constitution Hill, will be hosting a panel discussion to commence a new phase of Concerts SA research into South Africa's music industry. After the panel discussion, guests are invited to attend the ConHill Market where they can enjoy live performances by Maleh, Gina Mabasa, Ntshikiwane, and SPARTZ. |

Representation considers why women are so often stereotyped into limited roles in the music industry. The panel will consider why and how this happens — for example, why women in bands are often expected to be vocalists, while only a minority of women feature as instrumentalists and sound engineers? Are there signs of change? How could music education, audition processes, conditions of work, and media coverage contribute to change? |

Equity considers the issues of pay, access to opportunities, and promotion linked to representation. Are roles perceived as 'female work' valued less highly, and are women doing the same music jobs as men but being paid less? |

Safety considers the welfare and security of women in the music industry. What could venues, employers and city authorities do to support women — both music workers and audiences — better in the context of a night-time industry. In a country where gender-based violence prevails, and harassment and sexual violence come from fellow music industry professionals, what are the best ways to combat it? |
