What we've been listening to this week: |
- A new series of Dish with Angela Hartnett and Nick Grimshaw dropped this week. The first episode, where a guest comes round for a meal, is the chef and television personality Gordon Ramsay.
- Kathy Hoyle, the multi-award winning flash fiction writer, is on The Failing Writers Podcast this week with tips about how to write short stories.
- The comedian Shaparak Khorsandi and screenwriter and author Emma Jane Unsworth are on Sara & Cariad’s Weirdo Book Club this week.
- Richard Wiseman's been explaining the psychology behind keeping a relationship exciting on Richard Wiseman's On Your Mind.
- Speaking of relationships, would you move in with your Tinder date after three weeks? That's what they've been asking on First Dates: The Podcast
- Author and acclaimed speaker Bronnie Ware is on Feel Better, Live More with Dr Rangan Chatterjee this week, talking about the top five regrets of the dying, which she learnt from working in palliative care. These regrets are: “I wish I’d lived a life true to myself”, “I wish I hadn’t worked so hard,” “I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings,” “I wish I stayed in touch with my friends” and “I wish I’d allowed myself to be happier.”

Another week, another podcast launch hosted by a notable duo. Former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and former Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls have teamed up for a new weekly show that attempts to give us some insight into what might be happening behind the doors of Number 10. The ambition is to also give a sense of the logic and thinking behind different policy and strategy decisions, which are all the more important as we head towards an election year. The first episode taps into the woeful future of HS2 and the implications of the triple lock pension.
The reason why this podcast is piquing interest in media and political circles is not just because of who is in front of the microphone, but also the people putting it together. The series is the latest by Persephonica, who also makes The News Agents podcast with Emily Maitlis, Lewis Goodall and Jon Sopel and At Your Service, the pop culture series fronted by Dua Lipa. They have a knack at creating podcasts that get the nation talking. I guess the challenge with this series is that it is debuting in a rather saturated market. |

This new podcast hosted by journalist Zing Tsjeng and BBC business editor Simon Jack has an interesting premise. Each episode explores the life story of a notable billionaire, from Rhianna to Sir Philip Green. They explore how they built their wealth, they evaluate whether they are using that money and power for good or for evil. Zing and Simon have a great partnership, with Simon able to provide the business insight and Zing providing sharp commentary. There are some rather sobering facts mentioned throughout, such as that 81 billionaires have the same collective wealth as the poorest 4.5 billion.
The first episode explores the life of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, whose online book store has greatly expanded to include everything from cloud computing to supermarkets (that don’t have checkouts.) He’s a business leader who revolutionised the way we shop (and gained millions of loyal customers for undercutting many of his rivals), but has attracted controversy for his abrasive management style to the company’s tax arrangements.

Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth |
I hardly need to introduce Gyles Brandreth (and his jumpers) as he’s such a familiar presence on daytime television. His new podcast features him sitting down with a familiar name to ask them about their first memories of life and how these early experiences have shaped them to become the person they are today. He has also had a knack in attracting some rather big names in just a few weeks. The names so far are Dame Judi Dench. Alison Hammond and Ken Bruce. There’s also the chance for you to share your first memories with other listeners in their postbag. |

Earlier this year BBC Two aired Saving Lives in Leeds, a documentary following the doctors delivering life saving operations and making difficult decisions and at an NHS Teaching Teaching Hospital.
This new four-part podcast series, hosted by the journalist and presenter Liz Whitaker, digs a little deeper into the activities of the hospital beyond the emergency ward, such as the involvement and importance of play at their children’s hospital.
