Hello!
Welcome to Great British Podcasts, hope you're having a great Sunday!
The British Podcast Awards, the biggest night in audio, took place earlier this week, so let’s take a look at some of the big winners.
Podcast of the Year award went to A Positive Life: HIV from Terrence Higgins to Today. The BBC Wales and BBC Sounds series, which also won the Best Factual Award, follows the history of HIV in the United Kingdom. It starts by celebrating the life and mourning the death of Terry Higgins, one of the first people to die from an AIDS-related illness in the UK.
The Listeners’ Choice podcast, chosen by the public and readers of the Great British Podcast newsletter, went to RedHanded. It is the third consecutive year that Hannah Maguire and Suruthi Bala have won for their meticulous true crime series.
Best Daily Podcast went to The News Agents, hosted by Emily Maitlis, Lewis Goodall and Jon Sopel. Best News and Current Affairs podcast went to Today in Focus by The Guardian. Different with Nicky Campbell won Best Interview.
The Best Comedy award went to The Skewer on BBC Radio 4, Best Entertainment Podcast went to Elis James and John Robins on BBC Radio 5 Live and Best Kids Podcast went to Super Great Kids’ Stories. The Best Specialist Podcast went to Persevering: Grief as Told by Young People.
And there was the first podcast introduced to the podcasting Hall of Fame this year. The inductee was My Dad Wrote A Porno, which earlier this year wrapped after 430 million downloads. A well deserved congratulations. You can listen to many of the winners talk about their shows on The Media Podcast which was back stage on the night.
We’ll be looking at some other big winners in next week’s newsletter, but to see the full list of winners just head to our website at podcastrex.com. Also this week on Podcast Rex, there’s a new article from Feast Collective founder Kate Taylor about ten great podcasts dealing with climate change. Well worth a read (and listen!)

What A Combo with Fern Brady |
There are a lot of food podcasts, from quizzing celebrities over a nice three course meal to celebrating guilty pleasures we indulge in at the end of a long day. This new series, hosted by comedian and Taskmaster victim Fern Brady, takes this format in a different direction: exploring and debating weird food combinations that shouldn’t work but yet somehow do, but also might be socially awkward to admit. From pickles dunked in jam, to bananas mixed into peanut butter.
In each episode a special guest is invited to talk about their favourite combination, and at the end of the episode both the guest and Fern are invited to try out a unique food combination thought up by the show’s producers. Their first guest is chef Big Has and future guests include Jamali Maddix, Nadiya Hussain and Abi Clarke.

Last week Rupert Murdoch announced that he was stepping down as chairman of his vast news and entertainment empire. Even though he is aged 92, and has been now given the role as Chairman Emeritus, the news created shockwaves throughout the industry as few believed that a man known for having such a hands-on involvement in his media titles would ever retire.
It was his decision, and his influence and legacy, which is explored in-depth in the first episode of a new media podcast by Prospect Editor and former Guardian Editor Alan Rusbridger, and former Editor of the Financial Times Lionel Barber. As the podcast will specialise on the ethics and impact of the media industry, their guests include former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who claims that Murdoch has done “more to damage American democracy than any other individual alive today” and Michael Wolff, who has a new book on the Murdoch Empire.

A bewildering and unpredictable story about a man’s friendship with a wild bottlenose dolphin off the coast of the North of England, and how that friendship led to serious accusations of abuse by another local. These accusations led to national news and countless tabloid headlines.
The story, presented by journalist Becky Milligan (who has swam with Freddie) tries to get to the bottom of what really happened, delving into the issue of animal rights and cruelty, and the court of public opinion. The first four episodes are available to listen to now, with early access to the fifth and sixth episode for subscribers to Wondery+.

McCartney: A Life in Lyrics |
This new series is expected to be a treat for Paul McCartney and Beatles fans, as McCartney breaks down the meaning and craft of some of his most famous and celebrated songs.
These conversations, which were recorded on tape usually placed on the table between them, were never meant to be for a podcast. They were originally recorded to be used for a book by McCartney and the poet Paul Muldoon. But as McCartney is a great and natural storyteller, they’ve been reworked into these episodes. There’s an eight minute teaser to kick the series off, with new episodes out every Wednesday.
