Shooters!
Center up!
Welcome Shooter, to the October edition of The Liberty Pole, Project Appleseed’s newsletter.  We have a great issue lined up for you this month. As always, "Shooters! Your Preparation Period Begins Now!"
Words from the Founding Fathers
"Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights.”

Thomas Jefferson
Letter to Richard Price,
January 8, 1789
October's Event Highlight
In each issue of our newsletter, we highlight one of our events. In this issue, we want to showcase a recent 25M Rifle Clinic in Krakow, Wisconsin on September 16-17, 2023.

Below are some words from the Shoot Boss, Theokestral .

"We were blessed with an abundance of students. 22 members of TrailLife USA assembled in Krakow WI for a two-day 25m Appleseed. Some came to the Northwoods from as far away as Illinois and Indianna! We ran the line in two relays on Saturday.

[...]All the shooters applied themselves to the marksmanship lessons. They also listened intently to the history. There were plenty of good questions!"

Appleseed Out in the Public:
Prepper Camp
Project Appleseed was able to land a booth at Prepper camp in Saluda, North Carolina on September 22-24, 2023 due to the work of Shoot Boss, Upacreek. Below are some of her words about the event.

"Our Libertyseed at Prepper Camp was a great success from beginning to end.  Prepper Camp is a 3-day total immersion event in preparedness, survival, camp craft, off grid living, and homesteading skills. The hosts, Rick and Jane, made it easy to find our booth spot and set up.  TazDevil, Cokeguy, and Mrs. Cokeguy met me at 3 on Thursday, making set up quick and easy.  TazDevil and I camped with several hundred other attendees, vendors, and speakers.  Podcasts were being recorded late into the night along with campfires surrounded by patriots and families from around the country that come to the campout for fellowship and learning."

October's History Article:
"James Armistead - A Spy Story"
The pivotal summer of 1781 played a critical role in the American Revolutionary War for both King George III's military forces in America and the colonial forces opposing the British. Earlier that year, in March, General George Washington had issued orders to Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, instructing him to leave Philadelphia and take command of Continental forces in Virginia. Lafayette's mission encompassed countering a British invasion of the American South, confronting the traitor Benedict Arnold and his raiders, who were operating in Virginia, and gathering crucial intelligence on British troop strength, positions, and strategies.

In August, upon arriving in Virginia, British General Charles Lord Cornwallis, who commanded British forces in the South, dispatched Arnold and his troops to New York. From New York, British Commander-in-Chief General Henry Clinton ordered Cornwallis to secure a strategic location on the Virginia coast with a harbor capable of accommodating a fleet of warships to reinforce British ground troops. Cornwallis subsequently relocated his forces from Portsmouth to Yorktown in anticipation of a confrontation with the American and French forces. Remarkably, American and French forces seemed to anticipate Cornwallis's movements, doggedly shadowing the British general and his troops.

Unbeknownst to Cornwallis, a secret agent had been dwelling within his camp for months...

October's Marksmanship Tip
"Marlin 795 "ease of use" modifications"
This month's article is from one of our Senior Instructors, Mrs. Smith. In the field, she has found several modifications to the Marlin 795 both helpful and easy to do. These are not required for Appleseed or to make it shoot, but they might make an experience more enjoyable.

Now that the Standard COF has a legit dry fire component ( O0 )  I find I have a hiccup with my Marlin 795 loaners.

These rifles are stupid accurate, BUT.... they cannot be dry fired without a magazine inserted.  For several reasons, this is less than ideal. First and foremost, safety, of course. Second, the auto bolt lock back feature when there's an empty mag in place, preventing smooth dry fire sequences. (addendum, I've searched the owner's manual - there's nothing to indicate these rifles cannot be safely dry fired)

I can certainly fill that magazine with snap caps, if needs be, but I heard a rumor there's a mod.

Disclaimer: I am not recommending you do these modifications yourself.  Proceed at your own risk, or have a qualified gunsmith do the work.
