A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER
“WOW! The Little Station That Could. Bravo, Team. So proud of your work every day!”

I wrote that in a staff email loop when I heard that WCAI had won more national awards this year than in any of the past 23 years. That's quite an achievement for a small-market outlet, especially in this difficult era for local news.  And it’s real proof that Local Public Radio remains vital when we commit to doing our best for you.

Often, I refer to WCAI as small but mighty. The physical size of the station and the
staff roster may be small but the schedule of programs and award winning work are mighty. Our station does a lot with a little. Telling local stories that make a difference in the lives of listeners is a mighty mission indeed.

100% of the staff’s daily focus is on the public service of telling stories that matter, because our community matters to them. Stay interested. Keep listening.
Thank you,

Unique and exclusive opportunities to connect to CAI
Take a drive to the station
Come to WCAI (3 Water Street, Woods Hole) on Saturday, October 21, 11am – 2pm to see some beautiful British classic cars and meet fellow Founders Circle member Cameron Ferguson, President of the British Car Club of Cape Cod. The club will meet in WCAI’s parking lot, and all are welcome to walk around and tour their special car collection. We recommend parking in Falmouth and taking the shuttle to Woods Hole. And if you have your own classic British car, you’re welcome to participate and bring your own car to WCAI that day. Rain date is Sunday, October 22.

The Middle is back in the spotlight
As America prepares for another critical election in 2024, The Middle with Jeremy Hobson is back on Thursday evenings at 9PM, with a live national call-in show aimed at elevating the voices of Americans who live in between the east and west coasts – in the middle of the country. Listen for the important issues and ideas from the residents of this region. These are the Americans who are crucial in national politics but not often heard from. It’s a non-partisan, non-judgmental, non-condescending space where everyone should feel comfortable sharing their views and being a part of the conversation.
FC PRESENTS
Local programs, reports, and features that create our signature sound
Special sound snapshots
Neighbors and local voices are heard on CAI in sound bites called Sonic IDs. These sonics are portraits of Cape, Coast and Islands life and are often voices and stories we might not hear otherwise. Lasting just about a minute, these sound snapshots are repeated on air throughout the day and long remembered by listeners for their local flavor and character. Many provide a welcome break after sometimes intense national news. Most listeners have a favorite that they try to describe to family and friends and can be found archived on our website https://www.capeandislands.org/sonics-community-voices, ready for sharing. Learn more about how our founder Jay Allison first created these “bursts of lush and local life” here.

The importance of journalism in our lives
Journalist and film critic Tim Miller is a periodic guest with Mindy Todd on the The Point to discuss past and present films. Tim is a passionate advocate for local journalism and its important role in our lives. To share this passion, Tim will host a free, five-part series of movies about journalism and the importance of media literacy at Sturgis Library in Barnstable. He teaches film and journalism at Cape Cod Community College, where he is also the faculty advisor of the school newspaper. Tim is the Co-President of the Boston Society of Film Critics, as well as Film Critic for Cape Cod Wave magazine and the former Film Critic and Features Editor for the Cape Cod Times.
Kudos to the CAI News Team for promoting local journalism
How do Cape Codders and islanders learn about important news stories and conversations on regional issues? How can community leaders develop meaningful contacts within the media? And why is it critical to have vibrant and timely journalism?

Those were among the discussion points at a panel in which our very own local Weekend Edition Host Ryan Bray and News Round-up host and CAI News Editor Steve Junker participated in, during an event hosted by Leadership Cape Cod, as part of their larger mission to inspire and develop the next generation of leaders on Cape Cod.
As part of this program, a full morning was dedicated to the role of the media on Cape Cod, anchored by the panel discussion. Steve said “CAI is one of the very few providers of regional news and arguably the most robust. We tell the stories that link the Cape’s fifteen towns, the islands, and South Coast. Speaking to the Leadership group was a great opportunity to extol CAI’s mission, but also to hear from the class members. Many had questions about the role of local media and how to enlist it to put out information to the Cape community."
To submit community news to CAI, please fill out and submit this digital PSA form on our website.
In addition, CAI reporter Eve Zuckoff and CAI producer Elsa Partan spoke on a panel this summer at Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole to an audience of about 30 undergraduates. The students are part of a group that comes to Woods Hole each summer to work alongside professional scientists in their labs. During the panel discussion, Eve and Elsa shared their ideas about how to pursue careers in science journalism. We applaud them for promoting their craft in the community.
