Dear student,

Yesterday I joined students and staff from our School of Indigenous Studies for a smoking ceremony at the Bilya Marlee building. Led by Elder Dr Richard Walley, it was a time to gather and quietly reflect following the weekend referendum on the Voice to Parliament.
I ask that we all acknowledge the deep impact the result has had on students and staff right across our community, and that we extend understanding at this time.
If you feel the need to talk to someone, please reach out to our UWA team. The Student Wellbeing Hub at Shenton House has a range of health and wellbeing services available to support you including the opportunity to drop in for a chat with a peer supporter at The Living Room. UWA’s Guild Student Assist counsellor is also on hand to help and provide support.
As a University, I reiterate our absolute commitment to supporting Aboriginal peoples’ rights and uphold the recognition of Aboriginal people as our First Nations people. We remain, as ever, determined to increase participation and success for Indigenous students and in collaborating through our research to help close the gap in education, health, and employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
I thank you for demonstrating our University’s care and support of each other.
Regards,
PROFESSOR AMIT CHAKMA
VICE-CHANCELLOR
