Compensation and Staffing News
November 2023

Editor's Note

Dear Readers,

November is a big month in the Office of Church Staff Finances! It's Open Enrollment month, as well as the time when we post salary program information for the upcoming program year. In addition, our Retirement Team is working diligently with Empower on reporting and platform adjustments.

Below you'll find information about both Open Enrollment and our Congregational Salary Program, along with an article pointing to ways of being a faithful employer when hiring staff or when letting them go.

Faithfully,
Jan Gartner, Compensation and Staffing Practices Manager

Congregations as Faithful Employers

When we speak of congregations as faithful employers, we're talking about being faithful both to the law and to Unitarian Universalist values.

Faithful to the Law: Form I-9 Documents
In the August issue of this newsletter, we shared the updated I-9 Form (the required version as of November 1) and the need to resume physical verification of documents following the pandemic.

Form I-9 provides proof of identity and authorization to work in the U.S. Verifying an employee's documents and completing the I-9 is a crucial legal aspect of the hiring process. You must inspect an employee's I-9 documents carefully. Expired documents, for instance, cannot be accepted. You'll find everything you need to know about completing I-9 forms at I-9 Central.

Faithful to UU Values: Compassionate Terminations
Involuntary terminations are never easy. We've created a new resource to help congregational leaders and staff supervisors ensure the best possible outcomes for the congregation while offering kindness and respect to the employee. Treating a departing staff member well is good not only for them but for the congregation.

Open Enrollment: It's Open!

For Health, Hospital Indemnity, and Dental Plans
Open Enrollment is taking place from November 1 to 30. Staff scheduled to work at least 750 hours per year and expected to be employed for at least a year are eligible for UUA Insurance Plans. Please make sure that all eligible staff are aware that they can sign up for the following during Open Enrollment:

What about Life and Long-Term Disability?
There is no open enrollment for Life and Long-Term Disability. If employees do not enroll within 60 days of their start date, they will need to go through an Evidence of Insurability process in order to get coverage. Contact InsurancePlans@uua.org for more information.

Salary Program Resources for 2024-2025

Because so many congregations begin planning and budgeting for the next program year in the late fall, we make revisions to our Congregational Salary Program information by early November for the following July through June. All pages and documents have been updated.

Our main Congregational Salary Program page at the button below provides links to all of the documents you need, as well as to the page containing the Recommended Salary Ranges. If this is your first time accessing the Recommended Salary Ranges page, you'll be asked to complete a very short form confirming that you've reviewed our Introductory Resources.
