Response to research on inductive effects of alkyl groups
Dear Colleague,

Please forward this message to all teaching/delivery staff associated with the following qualifications:
In response to the recently published research by the Royal Society of Chemistry which suggests a need for reconsidering explanations based on inductive effects of alkyl groups (Mark C Elliott et al., Journal of Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry, Issue 2 2025), we would like to provide clarification on what this means for our specification.
The findings of this research may be relevant to the following specification points:
  • Unit 5: A2: Structures, reactions and properties of commercially important organic compounds – stability of carbocations
  • Unit 13: A1:-Structures, reactions, uses and properties of non-carbonyl compounds: halogenoalkanes, alcohols and amines – primary, secondary and tertiary amines
In the short term, to remain compliant with wider policies and procedures, we will not amend our specification, so we will continue to credit student responses as we have done previously. You are not required to adapt your teaching to consider these findings.

So as not to disadvantage those students who may be familiar with this research, we will broaden our mark schemes in external assessments to reflect the nature of these new findings. In the future, if we are in a position to refresh the content of these qualifications, we will consider the impact of these new findings further.
