Valley Line West LRT: Phase 1 accelerated roadwork to begin soon
April 4, 2025

Valley Line West construction will be ramping up shortly, with Phase 1 of the accelerated roadwork plan set to begin soon.

The three-phased accelerated plan will occur from mid-April to November and will result in significant traffic restrictions at key intersections and along busy corridors. The accelerated work will reduce the overall duration of traffic restrictions by more than half, and allow Marigold Infrastructure Partners (MIP) to complete the majority of roadwork and trackwork in key areas in 2025.

“We know this roadwork will have a major impact on commuters, residents and businesses,” said Po Sun, Acting Director, Valley Line West. “Completing the majority of Valley Line West roadwork in 2025 would be a significant milestone and provide a degree of relief for the public and businesses from what has been a lengthy construction process. By the end of 2025, MIP’s goal is to have many of the roadways in their final configuration.”

“We recognize how impactful this will be to Edmontonians, especially the businesses and residences in the area,” said Jonathan Cox, Construction Manager, MIP. “To complete this work on schedule, MIP has dedicated crews working extended hours at these key intersections.”

What Edmontonians can expect

104 Avenue between 105 Street and 121 Street
Beginning the week of April 14, MIP will start preparing 104 Avenue between 105 Street and 121 Street so roadwork can begin the week of April 21. Preparation work will occur over numerous days, and includes moving traffic pylons, lane barriers and adjusting traffic and pedestrian signage at different locations.

Accelerated roadwork along 104 Avenue will reduce traffic to one lane eastbound and one lane westbound and is anticipated to last the entire construction season. More information on the traffic and pedestrian impacts along 104 Avenue, including detailed maps, can be found on
MIP’s website.

Stony Plain Road at 124 Street (full intersection closure)
Starting the week of April 21, the intersection of Stony Plain Road at 124 Street will be fully closed to traffic for approximately eight weeks. During this time, no vehicle traffic will be permitted through the intersection. Detours will be in place for vehicles using 124 Street and 104 Avenue/Stony Plain Road. More information on the traffic and pedestrian impacts at this intersection, including a detailed map, can be found on
MIP’s website.

Stony Plain Road at 156 Street (partial intersection closure)
Starting the week of April 21, the intersection of Stony Plain Road at 156 Street will be partially closed to vehicles for approximately 12 weeks. The work will be done in two, six-week stages, with different traffic restrictions for each of the two stages. More information on the traffic and pedestrian impacts at this intersection, including detailed maps, can be found on
MIP’s website.

87 Avenue at Meadowlark Road (partial intersection closure)
Starting in early May, the intersection of 87 Avenue at Meadowlark Road will be partially closed to vehicles for approximately 10 weeks. One westbound lane and one eastbound lane will remain open on 87 Avenue. More information on the traffic and pedestrian impacts at this intersection, including a detailed map, can be found on
MIP’s website.

Ahead of work starting, road signage will be posted near impacted intersections to give advance notice to the public, commuters, businesses and interested parties about upcoming traffic impacts.

Once the accelerated roadwork for Phase 1 is complete at each of the intersections, traffic lanes will begin to open. However, MIP crews will continue to work in the area, and minor traffic restrictions will remain in place until the end of the construction season, allowing MIP to complete as much work as possible. In addition to the accelerated roadwork, MIP will also continue to work at many other locations and facilities along the alignment.

Phases 2 and  3 of the accelerated roadwork are anticipated to begin in July and September. These phases will be coordinated to avoid overlapping impacts on traffic.

Construction will also have impacts on public transit. ETS will provide more details about related service adjustments at
edmonton.ca/servicechanges in mid-April.
