Nîkânîw, meaning “one who leads the way” in Cree, is a collaborative program between the City of Edmonton and the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society. The program focuses on water safety education, first aid, CPR and leadership skills, emphasizing respect for Mother Earth and the element of water. The course focuses on aquatic leadership skills, cultural teachings, life skills and pre-employment workshops.
Nîkânîw is a program for youth ages 14 - 22, of Indigenous ancestry. Since its inception, more than 500 participants have gone through the program. So far in 2025, the program has presented 21 Intermediate First Aid awards and 10 Bronze Medallion Awards to participants with more anticipated before the end of the year.
“The Nîkânîw Youth Leadership Program exemplifies the City of Edmonton's Indigenous Framework commitment to reducing barriers to recreation and employment within our city. These young, dedicated leaders have achieved remarkable accomplishments and have much to be proud of,” said Krystin Fileri, Indigenous Relations Director.
“This inclusive program provides youth the opportunity for hands-on learning and connecting back with the community, ” said Priya Bhasin-Singh, Director, Aquatics and Community Leisure Centres.“ A number of students successfully complete the program with certifications in amenity attendant, swim instructor and lifeguard prerequisite courses. Many participants have gone on to be leaders in the community and to have careers in aquatics.”
