In the Spotlight: FAMLI Updates

We’re always looking for ways to improve the My FAMLI+ portal that Colorado workers use to file and manage their paid-leave claims. This month we’re excited to share some exciting upgrades that you may notice:
  • Our Designated Representative pages have been upgraded to make the instructions clearer and reduce confusion.
  • FAMLI staffers have new tools to help claimants who were overpaid and need to file a hardship waiver for paying back the mistaken overpayments.
  • Foster parents who are filing for bonding leave will see clearer instructions for filing their claims.
  • FAMLI staffers have new tools to smooth the process for claimants who want to appeal a decision by the FAMLI Division.
We’re making these improvements to make sure that when life happens, FAMLI has you covered.

People are asking: What happens if I move during my continuous-leave claim?

A claimant receiving benefits for approved FAMLI leave should notify FAMLI when they move, because eligibility can change during a leave. If your employment is localized in Colorado when you begin your leave, but you transfer or move permanently to another state in the middle of your leave, your localization has changed even though you are still on leave.
However, your localization does not change if you move temporarily to another state during your leave, but intend to return to their Colorado employment. It's all about where the work exists as of the current time.
Here are some examples:
  1. A claimant goes on leave on April 1, and as of that day, they were working in Colorado. The claimant then officially transfers their work location to another state as of April 15, in the middle of their leave. This constitutes a change in the claimant's localization, and they are no longer eligible for benefits even though they haven't returned to work.
  2. A claimant who works in Colorado travels to California during their leave to take care of their mother. If they intend to stay in California, they will lose their Colorado localization as of the day they move. They retain their Colorado localization if they plan to return to Colorado when their leave is up.

Share Your Story

“I can’t begin to describe the difference this program has made for me. I want to offer my most sincere thanks to the people of Colorado for voting for this measure and to everyone who worked to make it a reality. You have made more of a difference than I can possibly put into words.”
That’s from Elisabeth, who took FAMLI leave to care for her sister after a diagnosis of lymphoma/leukemia.
We want to hear your personal stories, too! Please tell us how FAMLI is helping you through a significant life event. Each month we’ll feature real stories in this newsletter.

Take Our Survey

We want to learn more about how Colorado workers discover FAMLI benefits. Please take this short survey to help the FAMLI Division understand what you know about the program and any hesitations you may have had about applying for benefits. The survey will take less than 5 minutes. Thank you!
