Free compost available at Eco Stations |

Edmontonians can now pick up free, high-quality horticultural compost at the Ambleside and Kennedale Eco Stations. The City offers this service every year as the compost, made from grass, leaf and yard waste dropped off at Eco Stations and collected during yard waste collection days, is a valuable resource for residents looking to enhance gardens.
The free, self-serve compost is available for personal home use while supplies last. Residents are advised to bring tools (shovel, tarps), protective equipment (protective gloves) and containers to ensure safe collection. Residents may also want to wear a dust mask and protective eyewear on windy days. We ask visitors to take only what they need to ensure fair access for others.
Compost adds nutrients and microbes to soil to enrich plant mixes and enhance the growth of turf, ornamental plants, vegetables and fruit trees. Its low moisture makes it easy and light to work with, and this compost is lab-tested and weed-free. Along with the free compost available from the City, residents can also use their own yard waste and food scraps to create compost at home.
Tips to get the most out of compost:
- Use one part compost for every three parts soil for best results.
- Mix compost with soil. Direct planting into pure compost is not recommended.
- For topdressing and mulch, spread a thin layer of compost on the garden, around plants, or on a lawn. Compost will slowly mix into the soil, adding nutrients for plant roots.
- Wear protective gloves and wash hands after use.
For larger projects, horticultural compost is also available in pre-packaged bags (30L / 11 kg each) at select retailers and for bulk purchase.
