As you know, we recently held a public vote to decide the name of the new primary school being built in Dargavel – and I am pleased to now be able to reveal the option you selected.
Pupils from Dargavel and Bishopton Primaries were asked to suggest names – from there a shortlist of three was chosen, for the community to choose a favourite.
The shortlist (and the reason each was selected) was:
- Craigton Primary School (as the school is near Craigton Drive and Craigton Burn)
- Rossland Primary School (relating to a historic area name)
- Thistle Primary School (due to the nature surrounding the new building)
Voting took place over two weeks in March – via an online poll for local residents, and in school, where the pupils voted in person. Nearly 2,000 votes were cast.
The final totals were:
- Craigton Primary School – 723 votes (37.4%)
- Rossland Primary School – 476 votes (24.6%)
- Thistle Primary School – 735 votes (38%)
Members of the council’s Education and Children’s Services Policy Board will be asked to give formal approval to name the new school Thistle Primary School, when they meet next Thursday (15 May).
In time we will appoint a head teacher and develop a badge, identity and uniform for the new school – and we will keep those of you living nearby up to date on that.
The new school is being built on land near the far end of Craigton Drive and the new Western Link Road, currently being built by BAE and due to be completed later this year.
It is due to open in August 2027 and will have capacity for 800 pupils, as well as facilities for the whole community, including a full-size sports pitch.
Contractors are currently on site doing civil engineering works on the site ahead of construction starting later this year. More information on the new school – including a map of the new catchment – is available on our website.
