Sip, sip, hooray! New Entertainment District coming to downtown Edmonton
May 31, 2025

Patio season downtown is getting bigger and better with the creation of a new Entertainment District on 104 Street and expansion of the Rice Howard Way Entertainment District. The City is proud to partner with the Edmonton Downtown Business Association (EDBA) to create more opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the city’s vibrant atmosphere with on-street beverages and street entertainment.

“The Entertainment District pilot was such a great success, and we’re thrilled to be able to expand the concept to 104 Street,” said Puneeta McBryan, CEO, Edmonton Downtown Business Association. “The Entertainment District bylaw creates even more of a positive impact on the businesses bordering our public events like the Farmers Market by allowing patrons to buy drinks inside and enjoy them out on the street. This supports our efforts to create a vibrant place to live, work and play by supporting the restaurant sector and providing fun, exciting experiences for Edmontonians and visitors.”

Entertainment Districts provide designated pedestrian-only areas where patrons can purchase food and drinks, including alcoholic beverages, from participating businesses and enjoy them within the district’s boundaries amidst streetside entertainment.

“The Rice Howard Way Entertainment District, which was awarded with the
2024 Economic Developers of Alberta award for Best Renewal Project, has proven successful in strengthening the area as a year-round destination with an abundance of cultural vibrancy and economic activity. The addition of another District will infuse even more energy and enthusiasm into the heart of our city,” says Tom Girvan, Director of Downtown Economy.

New and Expanded Districts:
  • The new 104 Street Entertainment District will be activated during the Downtown Farmer’s Market on summer Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  • The Rice Howard Way Entertainment District will kick off on June 7, and the Edmonton Downtown Business Association will continue providing entertainment on select Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The Rice Howard Way district, which was activated last year on 101A Avenue between 100 Street and 100A Street, has been expanded to include 101A Street between 102 Avenue and Jasper Avenue.

“Expanding the Entertainment District to 104 Street is a big win for all the businesses along this historic street,” said Kelly Smart, owner, Kelly’s Pub. “The ability to sell our product more broadly during events is very beneficial to us small business owners. Not to mention, as a business owner who likes to host events on 104 Street, eliminating the red tape for AGLC requirements as well as eliminating the cost of a fenced beer garden is a great added bonus.”
