WAF Consultation Updates
Westmorland & Furness Council consultations in progress
A survey on waste management and recycling is underway. Have your say on future waste and recycling services, including questions on environment, fairness and consistency, cost efficiency, types of containers, frequency and green waste charging. You can also find out more about the consultation options, ask questions and discover more about waste and recycling services at a series of informal drop-in sessions in June at the following locations:
- Barrow Market | Friday 13th June | 9am - 2pm
- Ulverston Market | Thursday 19th June | 9am - 2pm
Introducing 20mph speed limits in suitable locations across the area has been identified as one of the Council’s key priorities to promote safer roads, reduce vehicle noise and enhance the environment for walking and cycling. Proposals for new 20mph speed limits have been published for comment by 18th July. Detailed proposal documents are online, and face to face consultations have been scheduled in June and July.
Maps have been published online showing sites submitted for possible inclusion in the Local Plan. Applications have been submitted in Ulverston in the Housing & Employment, and Minerals categories for first time uses and also change of use. There are submissions in Barrow, Dalton, Askam, Kirkby, Lindal, Marton, Pennington, Swarthmoor, Urswick, Baycliff, Gleaston, Penny Bridge, and the Cartmel Peninsula. Further assessment of submitted proposals will take place in accordance with the Assessment Methodology. Whilst the permanent loss of some countryside to housing may be inevitable, there will be an opportunity to influence which specific sites should be prioritised for development or safeguarded for future generations.

The Long Way Home
7:30pm 14th June at the Williams Room, Ford Park
Tickets: Book here
This is a journey in story and song around Cumbria’s Celtic Connections.
“Where do you come from…? Yes, but where do you really come from…?”
Join Jessie McMeekin and Dave Camlin for an evening of stories and songs exploring the enduring power of place. The Long Way Home takes the form of a journey which uses folk songs and tales to explore the links between the nations of England, Wales, Northern Ireland & Scotland.
Dave Camlin is a journey-man of Cumbrian roots music. Through all of Dave’s innovative music-making run the big themes of Cumbrian cultural roots, landscape and history.
Kicking off in the mid 90s with the experimental acoustic-electronica of Altar Native, Dave went on to form Tryckster, the classic West Cumbrian roots-rock band. Recent years have seen him focus his energies on leading Cumbrian community choirs such as Mouthful and Sing Owt!, as well as collaboration with storyteller Jessie McMeekin. |

Dido and Aeneas Concert Performance
7:30pm 28th June at Ulverston Methodist Church
Tickets: Buy here
Dido and Aeneas is an opera in a prologue and three acts, written by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell with a libretto by Nahum Tate. The dates of the composition and first performance of the opera are uncertain. It was composed no later than July 1688, and had been performed at Josias Priest’s girls’ school in London by the end of 1689.
The story is based on Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid. It recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her.
A monumental work in Baroque opera, Dido and Aeneas is remembered as one of Purcell’s foremost theatrical works. It was also Purcell’s only true opera, as well as his only all-sung dramatic work. One of the earliest known English operas, it owes much to John Blow’s Venus and Adonis, both in structure and in overall effect. |
