Valley Line West LRT: Phase 2 accelerated roadwork to begin |
June 6, 2025
Valley Line West accelerated roadwork continues to progress, with some of the Phase 2 work set to begin earlier than anticipated. The three-phased plan started in mid-April and is anticipated to continue until the end of November. The plan will reduce the overall duration of traffic restrictions by more than half, and get many of the roads into their final configuration by the end of 2025. |

“We know this work is disruptive to commuters, residents and businesses, and we appreciate everyone’s continued patience,” said Brian Latte, Director, Valley Line West. “We encourage residents to continue supporting local businesses affected by construction.”
“Thanks to favourable conditions, we’re able to open the 124 Street intersection on schedule. We recognize this closure had a significant impact on the businesses in the area, and we sincerely appreciate their patience during this important construction period,” said Jonathan Cox, Construction Manager, Marigold Infrastructure Partners. “Our partnership with the City continues to be essential in the implementation of this accelerated approach, and we’ll be taking lessons learned into the next phase.”
Phase 1 update
The intersection of Stony Plain Road and 124 Street closed to traffic on April 21. Work is slightly ahead of schedule, and the intersection is expected to reopen around June 9. This allows Marigold to move on to the intersection of Stony Plain Road and 142 Street earlier than planned. Other Phase 1 work includes:
What Edmontonians can expect in Phase 2
Stony Plain Road at 139 Street (full closure) and 142 Street (partial closure)
Starting around June 8, the Stony Plain Road and 139 Street “Y-intersection” will be fully closed to traffic for approximately nine weeks. Starting around June 10, the intersection of Stony Plain Road and 142 Street will be partially closed to traffic for approximately nine weeks.
While the closure of 139 Street was not a part of the accelerated roadwork plan, the decision to close it at the same time as 142 Street will reduce long-term disruption to the neighbourhood, businesses and commuters. Stony Plain Road at 149 Street will operate at full north/south capacity while these intersections undergo construction. More information on the traffic and pedestrian impacts in this area, including maps, can be found in MIP’s construction bulletin.
95 Avenue at 156 Street (partial closure)
The intersection of 95 Avenue and 156 Street will be partially closed to vehicles for approximately nine weeks. This work will begin once the work at Stony Plain Road and 156 Street is complete, which is anticipated for mid-July. More information on this work will be released once it is available.
Before the Phase 2 work starts, road signage will be posted near affected intersections to give advance notice to the public, commuters and businesses about upcoming traffic impacts.
The City and MIP are committed to keeping Edmontonians informed on construction timelines. To receive key updates and traffic restrictions, sign up for the City’s newsletter by selecting “Valley Line West (Downtown to Lewis Farms).” Edmontonians can also sign up to receive public notices directly from MIP.
Construction will have impacts on public transit. ETS will provide more details about related service adjustments at edmonton.ca/transitservicechanges in late June. |
