Arsene Arcand named City of Edmonton’s next Indigenous Artist-in-Residence
June 19, 2025

The City of Edmonton proudly welcomes Arsene Arcand as its newest Indigenous Artist-in-Residence.

A nêhiyaw (Cree) artist from Kipohtakaw (Alexander First Nation) in Treaty 6 territory, Arcand draws inspiration from his cultural roots to create distinct and powerful art.

“Art is a way to share our stories and our ways of living,” said Arcand. “I hope to not only share my own work but also help other young Indigenous artists showcase their talent.”

Arcand was first introduced to soapstone carving by his uncle, renowned artist Leo W. Arcand. Since then, he has explored a wide range of artistic mediums, including sketching and painting. His creative work is deeply influenced by his upbringing in the nêhiyaw way of life, guided by his late grandfather, spiritual leader and hereditary chief Arsene Joseph Arcand Sr.

Arcand’s work has been commissioned and gifted to respected leaders globally, and can currently be found at Bear Claw Gallery in Edmonton and The Avens Gallery in Canmore, Alta.

He carves stones into art pieces that carry spiritual significance, believing each stone holds its own story. Arcand looks forward to creating a new body of work, sharing it with the public and connecting with the community during his residency.

The Indigenous Artist-in-Residence program is one of the ways the City is honouring its commitment to truth, reconciliation and healing. The program is guided by the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Arts Council’s joint cultural plan, as well as the City’s Indigenous Framework. The City’s Indigenous Relations Office supports this work by advancing meaningful dialogue, supporting cultural safety, and embedding Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into civic structures, programs and services. The City Operations department is a new collaborative partner of the program, providing work space at a City facility for exclusive use by the Indigenous Artist-in-Residence during their term.
