Dargavel education updates

Friday 20 June 2025
Dear community member

I am writing with our latest update for you on progress with our work to expand and improve school capacity in the Dargavel area.

Thistle Primary School update
As we previously let you know, it has now been agreed the new primary school being built in Dargavel will be called Thistle Primary, after a public vote of pupils at Dargavel and Bishopton Primaries and local residents earlier this year.

Our contractors are currently on site doing civil engineering works to prepare the ground for construction starting later this year and this work is progressing well.

The entrance to the new school will be from the new Western Link Road currently being built by BAE, which will connect Arrochar Drive with the north end of Craigton Drive, and which is expected to be open later this year.

The new school remains on track to be open for August 2027. When built, it will include a full-size sports pitch and facilities available for the whole community.

Below are some of the previously-shared artists’ impressions of how it will look. These images show the outside of the building from the west side, and how the dining space and first-floor walkway will look.
We will continue to keep you updated on construction and arrangements for the opening of the new school as we get closer to the time.

More information on the location and catchments of the new school is on our website.

Dargavel Primary School and traffic update
We will also have contractors on site making improvements to the area around the existing Dargavel Primary School over the summer.

Work has now started to build a new drop-off/pick-up area on the land to the east of Dargavel Primary, with this work expected to be done by the end of August.

This is being built in response to feedback from the community and we expect will help improve the flow of traffic on Arrochar Drive at drop-off and pick-up times.

The completion of the Western link road (meaning Arrochar Drive will no longer be a dead end) will also help in this regard.

Work to improve the surface of the multi-use games area (MUGA) at the school will start at the end of June and be complete before school restarts in August.

While this work is happening, a temporary access route to the school car park will be created for anyone using it over the summer.

I hope you find this update useful and that you and your family have a good summer break.
