As we enter the fourth week of intensified federal immigration raids in Los Angeles, the harm to our immigrant communities has only grown. In this moment, it’s more important than ever to make sure people know their rights and how to protect themselves. That’s why my office is partnering with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), the Palms Neighborhood Council, and Council District 11 to host a virtual Know Your Rights workshop.
This training will share important information about how to stay safe and assert your rights and the rights of those around you during an immigration raid. This information is important to know and understand, no matter your immigration status, and I encourage you to join us:
Date: Tuesday, July 1, 2025
Time: 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: Online (via Zoom)
Los Angeles is strongest when we look out for one another, and together, we will keep showing up.
All my best,
Katy |

Meeting with SAG-AFTRA
On Friday, I had the opportunity to sit down with SAG-AFTRA members at their headquarters here in Council District Five. We talked about what it takes to keep good film and television jobs here in Los Angeles and what the City can do to make it easier for crews and creatives to keep working close to home. From fair permitting to protecting sound stages, I’m committed to keeping this industry strong for the families and small businesses that depend on it. These conversations help shape how we fight for good union jobs and a thriving local economy.
Windsor Village Annual Meeting
On Tuesday, I joined the Windsor Village Association for their annual meeting to connect with residents and share updates from my office. In the past several months, my office has helped create new speed humps in the neighborhood, and prioritized street light repair. There is more work to be done, and my team and I look forward to building on our momentum to create a safer, stronger community. |
Midvale Tiny Home Village Update
On Saturday, I was proud to join local businesses and neighbors for the first official open house of the new Midvale Tiny Home Village. This project will soon open its doors to its first residents, offering safe, dignified interim housing for people experiencing homelessness in Council District Five.
These 33 beds are the first interim housing units for adults ever built in our district, and they mark a big step forward in our work to bring more people indoors and on a path to permanent housing. It’s not only the right thing to do, it’s also required by Court order that we bring interim beds online in District Five. First Day, the nonprofit operating the site, shares my commitment to keeping the village well run and making sure it works for both its residents and the surrounding neighborhood.
LA84 Play Day and Block Party
Over the weekend, I joined families and neighbors at the LA84 Foundation and Play Equity Fund’s free Play Day Block Party in Historic West Adams. This event gives kids a safe space to run around, try new sports, and have fun in their own neighborhood. Play Day started here in Los Angeles and now reaches communities across the country. |

Remember Firework Safety
The coming Fourth of July holiday is an important reminder for all residents that fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles, including so-called "safe and sane" branded fireworks. With our hillside communities at elevated risk of wildfires, even a single spark can have devastating consequences. The Los Angeles Fire Department has classified much of our district as a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and fireworks present an unacceptable danger to homes, wildlife, and lives.
What You Need to Know:
- All fireworks are illegal in Los Angeles even if they were purchased legally in another city or state.
- Fireworks are considered explosive devices, and they are extremely dangerous. Every year numerous children and adults are injured and/or burned as a result of playing with fireworks.
- Possession, sale, or use of fireworks can result in fines up to $1,000 and/or jail time.
- “Safe and Sane” fireworks have the State Fire Marshal’s seal stamped on the packaging, but are nevertheless illegal in the City of Los Angeles.
What You Can Do To Help:
How to Report Fireworks:
- There are several safe and secure methods to report fireworks in Los Angeles:
- Use the MyLA311 smartphone app, available for free at www.lacity.org/MyLA311
- Fill out the LAPD online fireworks complaint form at: https://complaint.lacity.org/Complaint/fireworks
- Do not call 911 unless there is an immediate emergency, such as a fire or someone is injured.
- For non-emergency reports, call: 1-877-275-5273 (1-877-ASK-LAPD)

Metro Ambassador Program
The Metro Board of Directors approved a new four-year labor agreement with the Teamsters to bring Metro Ambassador jobs in-house. We’re also expecting the final step of a collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME for the Transit Ambassador supervisory staff to come before the Board soon. Bringing these jobs in-house will help the Ambassador program grow, including at our soon-to-open D Line stations. Ambassadors play a big role in helping riders find their way, reporting issues like broken equipment or trash, and creating a sense of safety and community just by being present on the system. This is a good step forward for Metro and for everyone who depends on it.
Temporary Service Suspension: May 17 – July 25
Starting Saturday, May 17, Metro’s D Line is temporarily out of service between Union Station and Wilshire/Western for a total of 70 days. Service is suspended at all eight D Line stations along this stretch to allow for major construction work. Riders can still access the B Line, which will operate normally between Union Station and Wilshire/Vermont before continuing north to Hollywood. Please plan ahead and consider alternate routes during this time.
