Government officials from African WTO Members that have not yet ratified the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies convened in Nairobi from 24 to 27 June for a regional workshop. Jointly organized with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the four-day event aimed to strengthen participants’ capacity to advance domestic processes for ratifying the Agreement.
Through expert-led sessions and interactive group work, participants explored the Agreement’s scope and disciplines—focusing on subsidy prohibitions related to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, overfished stocks, and other forms of harmful subsidies. The workshop also examined cross-cutting themes such as transparency and notification requirements, institutional frameworks, and available technical assistance.
Highlights included case studies, simulation exercises, and regional experience-sharing sessions, allowing participants to identify common implementation challenges and align strategies for sustainable fisheries governance. The workshop also introduced the WTO Fisheries Funding Mechanism designed to support implementation efforts in developing and least-developed countries.

WTO TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
Coordinated and managed by ITTC |
A core function of the WTO, technical assistance and capacity-building activities seek to enhance professional and institutional trade capacities in developing and least-developed WTO member and observer governments. They provide beneficiaries with enhanced know-how to take full advantage of the opportunities from the rules-based multilateral trading system and address potential challenges. Within the WTO Secretariat, the Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC) oversees these activities. |
