Workshop Deepens Understanding of WTO SPS and TBT Agreements in Comoros |
|
A national workshop on the WTO Agreements on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) was held in Moroni, Comoros, from 8 to 10 July, bringing together 30 participants to strengthen their understanding of the core principles of the two agreements. The activity forms part of Comoros’ post-accession implementation strategy.
Participants reviewed key provisions of the SPS and TBT agreements, with emphasis on the transparency obligations, the roles of National Notification Authorities and Enquiry Points, and the functioning of the WTO SPS and TBT Committees.
In addition, hands-on training on the ePing SPS&TBT Platform, offered participants practical insights into how digital tools can support regulatory monitoring and facilitate stakeholder engagement and coordination. The workshop also included a review of the state-of-play of Comoros' TBT and SPS post-accession implementation plans, reinforced domestic coordination efforts, discussed mechanisms for addressing SPS and TBT trade concerns and outlined funding opportunities available through the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF). |
WTO TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
Coordinated and managed by ITTC |
A core function of the WTO, technical assistance and capacity-building activities seek to enhance professional and institutional trade capacities in developing and least-developed WTO member and observer governments. They provide beneficiaries with enhanced know-how to take full advantage of the opportunities from the rules-based multilateral trading system and address potential challenges. Within the WTO Secretariat, the Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC) oversees these activities. |
