City of Edmonton launches Beyond Belonging Grant to support 2SLGBTQIA+ safe spaces
July 21, 2025

The City of Edmonton is pleased to announce the launch of the Beyond Belonging Grant to support community-led initiatives that create safer, more inclusive spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ residents.

This new funding program aligns with the 2SLGBTQIA+ Safe Spaces Action Plan 2025 – What We Heard Report and responds to City Council direction from July 4, 2023 and April 3, 2024. It reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to advancing equity and addressing systemic barriers, and fostering belonging for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

A total of $750,000 will be awarded through one-time community grants. Projects can receive between $10,000 and $100,000, with exceptions considered. All funded projects must be completed within one year of receiving approval.

Successful applications will be aligned with priorities identified in the Beyond Belonging: Building a 2SLGBTQIA+ Safe Spaces Action Plan 2025 – What We Heard Report:
  • Create or enhance safe, inclusive spaces, events and services for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, with priority given to initiatives that take an intersectional approach.
  • Strengthen efforts to address hate and discrimination, including reporting, response and restorative justice practices.
  • Deliver public or professional education that challenges bias and promotes inclusion—especially for businesses and frontline services.
Project outcomes should be consistent with priorities identified in the Beyond Belonging: Building a 2SLGBTQIA+ Safe Spaces Action Plan 2025 – What We Heard Report:
  • 2SLGBTQIA+ Edmontonians feel safer, included and supported in public life.
  • Access to safe, affirming and responsive services improves.
  • Businesses and frontline services are better equipped to support and include 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
  • Hate is prevented and addressed through effective processes that support survivors.
