Low Level Bridge rehabilitation begins, traffic detours in effect
July 24, 2025

Starting July 28, the City will begin rehabilitation on the southbound Low Level Bridge. The work will include repairs and strengthening to extend the structure's lifespan and ensure the bridge remains a safe and reliable river crossing.

While this work is necessary, it will impact travel in and out of downtown. The City recommends all commuters use the traffic disruptions map to plan their routes.

During construction, the following traffic changes will be in place:
  • Starting July 28, there will be no northbound traffic on the Low Level Bridge. Northbound traffic will be detoured to the James MacDonald/98 Avenue Bridge for the duration of construction.
  • Work will start with building a traffic crossover. There will be temporary single-lane closures on the southbound Low Level Bridge during off-peak hours. Two-lane traffic will remain during afternoon peak traffic hours. Some full closures of the southbound bridge will be required.
  • In early-mid August, once the traffic crossover is complete, southbound traffic will shift to the northbound Low Level Bridge. Two lanes of southbound traffic will resume for the duration of construction.
  • The southbound bridge will be fully closed during construction.

People walking, cycling and rolling can continue to cross the river using the sidewalk on the northbound Low Level Bridge. The shared pathway under the bridges will remain open.

Two Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) bus stops that service northbound traffic on the Low Level Bridge will be temporarily closed: McDougall Hill and Grierson Hill (Stop ID: 1190) and Low Level Bridge and 98 Avenue (Stop ID: 2134). Routes 8, 500X, 511, and 523 will be on detour. More information is available at edmonton.ca/busdetours.

ETS has a number of options for those heading downtown from south Edmonton. In addition to a variety of Park & Ride locations that riders can use to access the City’s LRT network, ETS has several bus routes that go through the downtown core. Plan your trip at edmonton.ca/transit.

Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025.
