Ulverston Hospital Parade Committee
Ulverston Festivals

The sixteen gentlemen members of the Ulverston Hospital Saturday Parade Committee of 1905 are pictured here in the rear yard of the Ulverston Cottage Hospital, which was in Newton Street.

The first Ulverston hospital annual parade took place in 1899, to raise money for the hospital. The parade assembled and started at The Gill, processed all around town, and finished at The Gill. Music was provided by bands from Ulverston, Lindal, and Dalton. There was also a shorter evening procession which was lit by lanterns. By 1901, the event had become very popular, and the procession was a mile and a half long.

There's a wonderful short film of the 1924 parade on the British Pathé website: Rose Queen (1924).

Through successive years, the parade continued to grow, until the advent of WW2, when it came to a temporary halt, and didn't restart until 1951, the year of the Festival of Britain. By 1953, the year of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation, the parade had grown again, and was accompanied by a military tattoo and fireworks in Ford Park, and the ceremonial lighting of a beacon on Hoad Hill.

There was a gap in the parades from 1961 until 1972, apparently due to a shortage of volunteers. The event was then re-established, and became known as the Ulverston Carnival Parade. The field display of market stalls, music and dancing took place at Dragley Beck for a few years, but the location seems to have been unpopular, and it transferred back to Ford Park in 1981.

Welfare State International, Renaissance Theatre Trust, and local musician Colin Williams then got involved, and a series of spectacular carnival nights began at The Gill. The carnival parades carried on through the 1990s and into the new millenium, but suffered a gradual decline in support, until now they are no more. Sad indeed for Ulverston, but we are fortunate that many new events have come along, and the Ulverston community continues to enjoy an active and innovative festivals town.

The information for this article is largely gleaned from the fascinating book, "Ulverston Festivals Town", by Graham Whalan, ISBN 9781527241879, published in 2019 by Stable Door Press, and still available from booksellers.
Cadent Gas tunnel
Ulverston Canal Gas Pipeline

Website: Cadent Gas

A multi-million-pound engineering project to secure the gas supply for tens of thousands of homes in Cumbria is progressing well and remains on track for completion later this year. Cadent, which manages the local gas distribution network, is installing 850 metres of new pipeline, mostly in fields beside Ulverston Canal. A key milestone has just been reached, following the successful boring of a 73-metre-long tunnel beneath the waterway.

The new pipeline will create a safer, more resilient route for gas to reach homes, hospitals, schools and other essential facilities across the region, including Barrow-in-Furness. Once operational, it will replace the existing pipe beneath the canal footpath, which is showing signs of deterioration.

Recent weeks have seen significant progress, with a large section of the new pipe now buried in the fields adjacent to the canal. A huge crane was recently brought on site to lift specialist machinery into place, drawing attention from passers-by and canal users.

Paula Steer, Network Director for Cadent in the North West, said, "We’re really pleased with how the project is progressing. Completing the tunnel beneath the canal in such a short time was a major achievement, and we’re now well into the next phase of laying the new pipe. People using the canal footpath have been fascinated by what’s going on. Our engineers have often taken a few moments to chat with walkers and businesses, explaining what the work involves and why it’s so important. It’s been great to see that level of interest and curiosity from the community.

"This is a crucial investment in the long-term safety and reliability of the gas network in this part of Cumbria. I want to thank the local community for their continued support and patience as we carry out this important work."

As their numbers grew, they formed an official society which soon became incorporated as a limited company, The Cumbria Steam & Vintage Vehicle Society Ltd.  After a few years, the Steam Gathering moved south to Cark Airfield, and forward to July. Rusland Show
Rusland Show

11:30am 16th August at Whitestock Meadow, Rusland, LA12 8LB

Tickets: Book here

The Rusland Show is held on the third Saturday in August at Whitestock Meadow in the lovely Rusland Valley.

Rusland Valley is celebrating its 140th Show this summer! Back in 1871, six local farmers and gardeners came up with the idea of holding a small flower show and plant sale in this beautiful valley near Ulverston – the rest is history and the show has never looked back! In the past, special buses used to transport the crowds from Ulverston out to Rusland. Nowadays, the 1,000 or so show-goers will make their own way to Whitestock Meadow LA12 8LB on August 16th.

Some of the sports have changed over the years. There’s no longer pillow fighting or the ‘running high leap’, but we still have a host of Fell and Track races for adults and children, entered on the day, with cash prizes for adults & trophies for children (8 -16 years). There’s the Tug of War, and the fiercely contested infamous Egg Throwing Competition! You can also enter many of the horticulture, home produce, art and handicraft classes. There are competitions for children including a pet show and fancy dress and a wonderful craft tent with demonstrations of local skills. “We’re a traditional show for the community to get together, but we really welcome visitors from far and wide,” says Show Secretary Maureen Boyren. “We love it when more people enter the show and display their talents.”

Please come along and get involved in one of Cumbria’s smallest and friendliest shows. There’s a class for everyone!

Field opens at 11.30, events start 12.20.
Entry £5 adults, £1 children which includes entry to sports and classes.
Main Marquee Classes – enter by Saturday 9th August.
Tai Chi Qigong for Health
Tai Chi Qigong for Health

September to October at Bardsea Malt Kiln & Pennington Memorial Hall

Discover the Gentle Power of Tai Chi Qigong with Vicky Peake
Imagine feeling healthier, stronger, calmer, and more grounded - all through gentle movement, breath awareness, mindful focus, and meditation. If this appeals, you’re warmly invited to join a Tai Chi Qigong for Health six-week course starting in September, designed for beginners and anyone seeking a holistic, accessible way to support their health and wellbeing.

What is Tai Chi Qigong?
Tai Chi Qigong has been practiced for over three thousand years to promote and maintain good health. Qigong is the foundation of Tai Chi and all martial arts. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it draws on concepts like Yin and Yang and the Five Elements (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal), each linked to specific organs and aspects of health. This holistic approach helps harmonise body, mind, and emotions through simple, accessible movement.

The Benefits
Tai Chi Qigong supports the smooth circulation of qi through the meridian system, helping to clear blockages, restore equilibrium and bring the body's energies into balance. In this way, Qigong not only fosters physical and emotional wellbeing, but also helps maintain the dynamic harmony at the heart of traditional Chinese health philosophy. Regular practice helps strengthen the body and mind, reduce stress, improve sleep, boost circulation, enhance mental clarity, and increase flexibility - making it a gentle yet effective way to support your wellbeing.

About the Teacher
My journey with Qigong began in 2000 through my work as a Shiatsu practitioner, seeking ways to stay grounded and energised in a busy clinic. I completed my teacher training at the College of Elemental Chi Kung, London in 2005 and have been privileged to share Qigong in many settings since. Over the years, I’ve seen the benefits Qigong brings - not just to physical health, but also to mental and emotional wellbeing. I love helping people find their own connection to Qigong’s quiet wisdom and tangible benefits.

What to Expect
Classes are relaxed, friendly and adaptable for all abilities. Each session begins with a gentle warm-up followed by step-by-step instruction and practice of the main form/sequence of movements being taught, combining movement with breath. We finish with closing forms and an optional guided meditation. Most people report feeling calmer and more centred after one or two classes, with deeper benefits growing over time.

Getting Started
Qigong is for everyone - no special equipment, flexibility, or fitness needed. Just wear comfortable clothes and flexible soled trainers or shoes. You can practice standing or seated, and the movements are easily modified.

Tai Chi Qigong for Health - Five Element Form Course Details
In this six-week beginners’ course, you'll be gently introduced to the foundations of Qigong practice, including the Wuji stance (a posture of relaxed stillness), abdominal breathing to calm and centre the body, and techniques for circulating energy (Qi) through movement and breath. You'll also learn to connect with the Dantians - your body’s energy centres - and develop awareness of how focus and breath can restore balance and vitality. Alongside these core principles, you’ll be guided through the Five Element Form, a flowing sequence that connects each movement to one of the five elements - Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal - supporting balance in body, mind, and spirit.

Tuesdays: 10am to 11:15am, 9 Sept to 14 Oct, Bardsea Malt Kiln Village Hall, Ulverston, LA12 9QT.
Wednesdays: 7pm to 8:15pm, 10 Sept to 15 Oct, Pennington Memorial Hall, Ulverston, LA12 0RT.
Fee: £50 for six weeks course, or £10 per class.
Spaces limited - early booking advised.
