Off Grid Adventures
On Tuesday, my team and I joined neighbors across Los Angeles for National Night Out, an annual tradition on the first Tuesday in August that strengthens police-community partnerships and builds neighborhood connections. This year, we visited four events hosted by the Olympic, Pacific, West LA, and Wilshire Divisions. We’ve made it a tradition to stop by every police division that serves CD5 and thank them for their work. At each stop, we met residents, community leaders, and our dedicated first responders who work every day to protect and support our neighborhoods.
National Night Out is rooted in a very simple but powerful idea: when neighbors know each other, get organized, and work with law enforcement and elected officials, our communities are safer. That has proven true in places like Cheviot Hills, where residents came together after a spike in burglaries, partnered with LAPD and my office on increased patrols, and invested in tools like license plate readers. Crime in the area has since dropped significantly, though we're not out of the woods yet. In Beverly Grove, community meetings and new Neighborhood Watch programs are helping residents and police address break-ins. My office recently allocated discretionary funding to install ALPR cameras in this community as well.

These examples show the progress we can make when we work side by side, while reminding us there is always more to do. That also includes addressing the many street light outages that make our neighborhoods more vulnerable, which is why Council will soon be voting on a fee change to help fund repairs. Even one crime is one too many, and we remain focused and committed to the work ahead.

Keeping our neighborhoods safe will always take collaboration, vigilance, and trust. Whether it’s through a block meeting, sharing information with a Senior Lead Officer, or looking out for a neighbor, every action matters. I’m grateful to everyone who came out for National Night Out and to our LAPD officers for their partnership, and I look forward to continuing this work together. If you’d like to get involved or start a Neighborhood Watch in your community, please reach out to my team.

All my best,
Katy
KYCC Wilton Place Elementary Summer Party
On Monday, I joined KYCC at Wilton Place Elementary. My office was a proud co-sponsor of this event, providing each kid with a new lunchbox, and bringing the Bob Baker Marionette Theater to perform. I also read the kids a book, "Weather Together" by Jessie Sima, which is all about the power of community and connection. We had a blast!
North Westwood Neighborhood Council Meeting
On Wednesday, I joined the North Westwood Neighborhood Council for their monthly meeting, the first with its newly seated board. We discussed several critical issues facing the Westwood community, including new parking rates at Broxton Plaza, the status of the Westwood Bike Lane project, and opportunities for my office and the board to work together to bring new life to Westwood Village. Revitalizing Westwood Village is a priority for our office, as I know it is for the community, and we plan to announce a new initiative in the next couple months.
On-Demand Tree Trimming Program
This week, the Council passed my motion to restart the City’s On-Demand Tree Trimming Program, which allows weekend crews to respond quickly to requests for tree trimming, root pruning, dead tree removal, and stump grinding. This year's budget sets aside $600,000 for this work, enough to trim nearly 2,000 trees across the city. I fought to protect this funding in a year when the budget included cuts to other services. It’s not nearly as much as we need, but in a lean budget year, it’s an important investment in keeping our streets and sidewalks safe, shaded, and accessible.
Pan Pacific Girls All-Star Team Council Recognition
On Friday, it was my honor to recognize  the 2025 All-City Champion Girls Basketball All-Star Team from Pan Pacific Park in Council chambers! Last year, this team came within a single overtime loss of the title. This year, they came back stronger and brought home Pan Pacific’s first championship in 20 years. Coach Dominic White, who grew up playing at Pan Pacific, now mentors the next generation on the same court, supported by Coach Al Marroquin, park staff, and families who cheer from the sidelines. I am proud to celebrate these athletes and the community that helped them come out on top citywide.
We're throwing a pool party! Come out to the Westwood Recreation Center Pool on Friday, August 15, for a free, fun-filled evening with music, food, and games!
