August Spotlight: How Paid Leave Advances Health Equity in Colorado |
Health doesn’t begin in a doctor’s office. It begins at home, in our workplaces, in our communities, and in whether we can afford to show up for one another when it matters most. |
That’s the core belief behind the FAMLI program. It’s also the promise of health equity: that everyone — regardless of who they are, where they live, or where they work — has the time, income, and community it takes to thrive. |
“A person’s health doesn’t begin at the clinic or end with a discharge summary. It’s shaped by factors far beyond the walls of any medical facility,” Tracy Marshall, FAMLI's Executive Director, said this month in an address to the Disability Management Employer Coalition. |
Paid Leave = Health Equity in Action |
In theory, health equity means removing barriers that prevent people from reaching their full health potential. In everyday life, that looks like never having to choose between a paycheck and chemotherapy. It means never having to choose between bonding with your new baby and going back to work after only one week. |
It also means not getting lost in paperwork because it isn’t in your native language, or because you’re not familiar with digital tools. |

Name Check — New Task For Self-Employed FAMLI Members |
We’re streamlining our system so individuals and businesses are clearly separated. That’s because FAMLI registration for self-employed individuals covers you personally, not your business. This means both your benefits and your premium payments apply to you, not your company — and your FAMLI premiums apply to all the income you earn from self-employment, not just a single business. |
Soon, we’ll ask you to take one simple step: |
Log in to your My FAMLI+ Employer account and make sure your full legal name is listed — not your business name. |
If you work with a Third Party Administrator (TPA), they’ll also be informed of this change so they can help support you, but only you can complete this task through the portal. |
Please confirm this information after August 20th, 2025. Doing so keeps your account in good standing, and most importantly, prevents coverage disruptions — so you can take the time you need, when you need it most. |
- Go to famli.colorado.gov.
- Log in to your My FAMLI+ Employer account.
- Confirm your profile uses your full legal name, not your business or entity name.

When you voted for paid leave, you established care as a core Colorado value. And last month, 2,459 Coloradans applied for leave to care for someone they love. That’s over 2,000 reminders that you’re part of something bigger — you’re part of the FAMLI family. |

“It’s not an overstatement to say that FAMLI leave saved my life.” |
That’s from Kellie, who took FAMLI leave to address the effects of domestic violence. You can see the rest of Kellie’s story on our FAMLI journeys page. |
