FAMLI Voices

“When I had my first son in 2018, I took six weeks off with no pay. I had to take out a personal loan to pay my bills, buy groceries, gas up my vehicle and take care of other basic needs during my leave. … This time around, FAMLI has allowed me both the time and the financial support to be able to care for myself, and the new addition to my family.”
That’s from Jessica, who took FAMLI leave to bond with a new child earlier this year.
Before FAMLI, any amount of unpaid time off could have been the difference between paying for groceries and going without food for many families across Colorado. In 2023 — the year before FAMLI claims began — 13.7% of our workforce still reported not being able to take time off for care.
Thankfully, Jessica’s story is the kind FAMLI was voted on to keep from happening in the first place. Thanks to Colorado's decision to enact paid family leave, working parents don’t have to choose between a paycheck and their babies. FAMLI gives all working parents up to 12 weeks of paid leave at any point for the first 12 months after a childbirth or foster placement.
The impacts extend beyond Jessica and the over 100,000 parents who have applied for bonding leave since FAMLI benefits began in 2024.
Research shows that ensuring new parents have paid time off to care for a new child contributes to a family’s healthy development, improves maternal health, and enhances a family’s economic security. (Equitable Growth, n.d.)

Amid Growing Healthcare Uncertainty, Colorado FAMLI Protects Families and Paychecks

Headlines about health insurance rate hikes, hospital closures, and government spending cuts have many Coloradans wondering whether health care will be there when they need it, and whether they can afford it.
We know that when health coverage shrinks, families often end up delaying care, dipping into savings, or taking on debt. We also know that for caregivers, the strain is especially compounded — which makes stable, dependable paid leave matter more than ever.
That’s why the FAMLI Division is doing its part to protect affordability.

FAMLI Knowledge: Navigating Overpayments

FAMLI benefits are calculated for each unique situation, and if those calculations change, the benefit can change, too. In some cases, individuals may find that they’ve been overpaid by the FAMLI Division.
If this happens, you have options.
  • You can repay the full overpayment online or by check or money order.
  • You can set up a repayment plan.
  • Or, if you believe the overpayment statement is wrong, you can request a reconsideration
If you’re unable to repay the amount, you can apply for a waiver. Select the “Submit Waiver Request” button on the Overpayment screen in My FAMLI+.
