As we approach a new season of festivals and celebrations, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) urges all residents to celebrate events safely and legally by following the rules around fireworks.
Residents who wish to use fireworks in Edmonton must submit an application for a fireworks permit. Application requirements can be found at edmonton.ca/Fireworks and on the Fireworks Fact Sheet. Any use of fireworks without proper permitting is illegal and may result in enforcement action, including fines of up to $10,000.
- Only certified professionals with an approved fireworks permit issued by EFRS are allowed to use fireworks within Edmonton’s city limits.
- EFRS requires 10 working days to process and approve fireworks permit applications.
- Work with a Fire Prevention Officer to pre-approve the site for your community or public event.
- A copy of the permit must be on-site during fireworks use and must be presented to officials upon request.
Between October and December 2024, Community Standards Peace Officers launched 127 investigations into the illegal use of fireworks, resulting in charges totaling $5,884 in specified penalties. The charges included stunting on a highway, discharging fireworks without a permit, residential noise violations and offences related to causing smoke or odour. Two investigations led to mandatory court appearances following careless use of fireworks. From October 1 to December 1, 2024, EFRS units were dispatched to 20 locations on calls related to fireworks. One event led to approximately $1 million in damages.
Fire risk in the city remains manageable when everyone follows proper fire safety and prevention practices. By working together, we can create memorable experiences while preserving the beauty and integrity of our city.
