Update on GFL landfill fire in Parkland County
November 12, 2025

On the evening of Sunday, November 9, Parkland County Fire Services responded to a fire at the GFL landfill located off 231 Street NW, east of Acheson. The fire began in the southwest section of the site, which contained a mix of construction and demolition waste.

As of Wednesday afternoon, November 12, fire control is now being managed by site owner GFL Waste Management and specialist industrial firefighting contractors. The fire is expected to continue to burn for some time.

Due to shifting wind directions, smoke and the odour of smoke can still be very strong in surrounding communities as fire mitigation efforts continue. The City of Edmonton encourages residents to reduce exposure to the smoke by keeping all windows and doors of buildings and vehicles closed during periods of poor air quality.

In addition, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services asks residents to help keep emergency services lines clear and to not call 9-1-1 to report this smoke.

Current information about air quality can be found on the Government of Alberta’s Air Quality Health Index Map or on the Government of Canada’s WeatherCAN app. Additional information on the hazards, symptoms, and health risks of smoke and poor air quality can be found on the Alberta Health Services website.
