Park Mains High School extension and redesign – progress update

Wednesday 19 November 2025
Dear parent or carer

I am writing to you from Renfrewshire Council with one of our regular progress updates on our work to redesign and extend Park Mains High School.

This email is being sent to all current parents and carers at Park Mains, plus those at the seven associated primary schools (Bargarran, Barsail, Bishopton, Dargavel, Inchinnan, Langbank and Rashielea).
Project update
As you know, Park Mains High School is being extended and redesigned to meet the expected future growth in demand in the area, and to increase the current capacity by around 400, to 2,000.

The project received full planning permission last week, which is a major milestone and keeps us on track to start construction next year and complete the project as planned by summer 2027.

Over recent months we — supported by Mr Dick and the wider staff at the school — have continued to work closely with our architects Holmes Miller and contractors Morrison Construction to refine the designs, and make sure the building continues to function well once extended.

We are now delighted to be able to share with you our fly-through video, which lets you see for yourself the artist’s impressions of how the redesigned building will look.

Some of the new features you can see include:
  • a new PE building next to the existing PE block with two sports halls and changing facilities, plus an upgraded fitness suite and PE classroom in the main building
  • an extension to the dining area with new furniture, and covered outdoor area to the courtyard (pictured below)
  • alterations to the existing building to provide additional teaching spaces and keep subjects together, plus extra toilets and new staff work hubs
  • expanded bus drop-off/pick-up area and extra car parking with additional electric-vehicle charging points and accessible spaces
  • new facilities including a bespoke drama studio, sensory garden and canopy over the outdoor teaching amphitheatre.
We hope you enjoy the video, which we feel shows off the extent of the transformation, the quality of the redesign, and the scope of the new facilities which pupils, staff and the wider community can look forward to once complete.
Projections
We recently published our updated 15-year projections for all Renfrewshire schools, produced in partnership with industry experts and based on a bespoke version of their tried-and-tested methodology.

The projections for Park Mains High School suggest the extended school will stay within capacity. They forecast a gradual rise over the coming years, with a potential peak of 1,941 in 2033, after which the school roll should stay around 1,800 to 1,900 each year.

This differs from last year’s projections, which showed a potential peak of more than 2,100. The new projections factor in some changes, including the most up-to-date house-building data, which shows a slower build schedule than previously expected.

So while the new projections assume the same number of pupils coming through the school, they spread them across a longer period, which in turn has produced a lower peak.

We will of course continue to monitor these numbers closely against actual pupil numbers each year, and they will continue to inform our planning.

The latest projections assume the school will continue to accept the current rate of placing requests each year. If the trajectory of the projections was to change in future, we have the option to apply our long-standing admissions policy (as we already do in other schools).

This would let us limit the number of places offered to those from outwith the area, or who didn’t attend an associated primary, and ensure capacity was preserved for those within the catchment. But the current projections suggest this won’t be needed.

You can see the full Renfrewshire-wide projections and accompanying report written for councillors on our website.

Next steps
We expect advance construction works to start in the spring of next year, with the main construction to follow in the summer. The new-build sections would then be fitted out next year and open for the new school term in August 2027.

The work is being planned carefully to ensure there is no disruption to education in the school itself, with much of the work inside the existing building being done in phases and planned for during school holidays where possible.

We are also continuing to meet with the Park Mains Liaison Group, which includes representatives from the parent councils of Park Mains and associated primary schools, to discuss progress on the project. We thank everyone involved for their contribution so far.

We will continue to keep you informed on the project as we move forward next year.

Kind regards
Gerard McLaughlin
