Dear Friend:

The rain we’ve been experiencing has hit us in Southern California hard but in many ways, it is also very welcomed. This time last year, our region was bone dry and that helped lead to advanced fire risk. While deluges of rain can raise a lot of issues, it has an immensely positive impact on fire danger in future months.

My staff and I are regularly in contact with our local first responders and front line entities like LADWP. They go above and beyond to prepare and help when trouble hits, but it is also important for each of us to do our part to prepare and stay safe. Stay home if possible and try to stay off the roads unless necessary during the rains. It’s far too common that when we’re faced with storms, whether due to speeding or flooding, crashes occur a lot more frequently.

911 is always the best option to call in life-threatening situations, if you see a downed tree/powerline or flooding, please report it by calling 311 or download the MyLA311 app. If a power outage impacts your community, please let DWP know by reporting here or by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).

It’s also a great time to double check your emergency bags and make sure you are prepared for mother nature to impact our daily life. Whether it’s a storm, earthquake or fire, natural disasters and emergencies can occur at any time and emergency kits are key. While it can be overwhelming to prepare for the worst, here are a few simple things that should be ready on the go: first aid kid, medication, flashlights, batteries and portable charges, copy of important documents, food and water, local maps, cash, and pet needs.

Thank you for doing your part to stay safe in the rains. Please never hesitate to reach out to me and my team at c03.foryou@lacity.org for more information on this or any other city-related issue.

Welcoming LAFD Chief Jaime Moore

Last week, the City Council unanimously approved the confirmation of Jaime Moore as the new Chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department. With an unmatched depth of experience in LAFD, he understands the needs of the Valley as he was Deputy Chief of Operations Valley Bureau. Blumenfield has witnessed firsthand Chief Moore's leadership and is confident in his ability to address public safety challenges.

Honoring our Veterans

Each November, Americans pause to honor Veterans and recognize the heroic sacrifices of so many of our heroes. This year, Councilmember Blumenfield was proud to recognize Erick Lace as CD 3’s Veteran of the Year. Straight out of high school, Erick served in the U.S. Army as a military intelligence analyst and photo analyst in Okinawa, Japan, earning the Army Commendation Medal for his project analysis work. After completing his term of service, Erick attended college and earned a Master of Business Administration degree. In addition to his career in human resources management, he was deeply involved in the state education system.

Erick is also highly active in our community. He co-founded the Winnetka Neighborhood Council, established the Neighborhood Watch in the Limerick area, advocates for local businesses as a member of the Winnetka Chamber of Commerce, and remains engaged with veteran organizations including Wings Over Wendy’s, the American Legion, and the Elks Club. Most importantly, Erick is a devoted husband to his wife, Jill, and a dedicated father to their three children. Congratulations, Erick!
In addition, Blumenfield was proud to join Angelenos at the annual San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade — the only Veterans Day Parade in the entire City of Los Angeles. As a founder of this parade 23 years ago when he worked for Congressman Howard L. Berman and as a member of the original parade committee, Blumenfield never misses attending this parade (except once because of COVID). It has become a wonderful tradition and an important way to  show appreciation for the men and women who fight to keep us safe and preserve our freedoms. There was a major funding hiccup this year caused by the City’s push to recoup its street closure costs that that almost derailed the parade, but thanks to quick action by Councilwoman Rodriguez whose district the parade route travels and additional investment by Blumenfield and other Councilmembers, the parade was put back on track.

Update on Proposed Project at Boething Treeland Site

As you may know, the owners of Boething Treeland Nursery sold their property to Dignity Memorial. At this time, applications have been filed with the Department of Building and Safety for grading and demolition permits. Councilmember Blumenfield recently sent out letters to adjacent residents to inform them of Dignity Memorial's plans and to dispel any misinformation. A copy of the letter can be found here.

Save the Date for Blumenfield’s Annual Holiday Party and Drive

Join Councilmember Blumenfield at his annual Holiday Gathering and Collection Drive on Thursday, December 4th, from 4-7pm at his District Office in Reseda. Team Blumenfield will be collecting toys, nonperishable food, hygiene products, and more to be distributed among community members in need. There will be food, live music, a photobooth, and good cheer. Don't forget to RSVP here.

Share Your Thoughts on the Warner Center Active Transportation Hub

Help shape how we walk, bike and get around the Warner Center area. The Warner Center Active Transportation Hub project supports the transformation of the Warner Center area into a hub for jobs and housing. After months of listening to your needs, reviewing community assets, and trying out ideas, your feedback is needed for draft concepts. Attend the Community Meeting on Tuesday, December 2nd at 6PM at LAFD Station 84 Community Room or stop by Valley Cultural Foundation’s Holiday Arts & Festival at Warner Center Park on Saturday, December 13th from 1-4PM. More information can be found here.

LADWP Warns Customers: Beware of Scammers

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is urging its customers to stay vigilant with utility scams on the rise around the holidays. A common phone scam is one in which scammers impersonate LADWP employees and threaten to shut off the customer’s water and power services if they do not receive payment immediately over the phone.

LADWP does not call customers threatening to turn off water and power service over the phone. If you receive a call like this, hang up. Call LADWP directly at 1-800-DIAL-DWP (800-342-5397) to ask about your account.

Around Town

Councilmember Blumenfield joined community members at the annual Grateful Hearts Fundraiser. This local event, produced by the West Valley Warner Center Chamber of Commerce, helps fund essential items for our local first responders at Los Angeles Fire Department Battalion 17 and LAPD Topanga and West Valley Stations. Blumenfield thanked all of the brave men and women from LAPD and LAFD who go above and beyond everyday to protect and serve our community.
The LA Charter Reform Commission’s Government Structure Committee held a meeting at Pierce College where Team Blumenfield and West Valley community members shared input and learned about potential updates to the City Charter. Learn more, take the survey, and sign up for updates at reformlacharter.lacity.gov.
Each month, Councilmember Blumenfield conducts Small Businesses Outreach by visiting storefronts and offices in different areas of the 3rd District. This month he visited several businesses along Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana. These visits provide Blumenfield a chance to share information about City resources and programs to folks who can take advantage of the information to help grow their business. Equally important, it provides an opportunity for him to get direct feedback and learn how his office and the City can better serve and support our local business community.

During Blumenfield's latest door-to-door small business outreach, he met with several businesses that are worth a visit including Nails & Beyond, Tarzana Tile Store, and My Optometry which has been operating for over 20 years.
