Welcome, Daniel, to the December edition of the North Carolina Project Appleseed Newsletter! In this issue of The Carolina Caller: Photos of the Month, 2025 By The Numbers, words of wisdom from James Madison, and more...Huzzah! |
|
|
NOTE: The Carolina Caller will go on hiatus for the months of January and February. However, there are still events every month throughout the winter! Please check www.AppleseedInfo.org for information about Project Appleseed and to find events. |
If you know, you know! At its heart, Project Appleseed is a long-range shooting program. At a 25-meter Appleseed rifle clinic scaled images on the targets represent full-sized targets as they would appear at longer distances. Or...you can go for the real thing!
At Known Distance events shooters take their centerfire rifles out to distances from 100 to 400 yards (or more!). Along with position and technique, shooters also get hands-on practice overcoming the challenges of shooting at those longer distances.
These pictures are from the recent November Known Distance event at the Appleseed home range in Ramseur, NC. The first one shows the very real scaling effect of those full sized targets as they recede into the distance. In the second picture, a group of accomplished KD shooters show off their special "Rusty's Rifleman Patch" on a beautiful Sunday morning.

NC Appleseed: 2025 By the Numbers! |
In North Carolina we are beyond lucky to live in an amazing and diverse state. From the Mountains through the Piedmont to the shores of the Atlantic, every day brings another opportunity to explore and thrive among our liberty-loving neighbors. And in 2025, all those days added up to one heck of a great year for Project Appleseed!
Thank you again to all the shooters, instructors, shoot bosses, and leaders who contributed. Every Appleseed event is full of good cheer, hard work, challenges, triumphs, and the shared heritage of this grand American experiment. |
Highlights of 2025 Project Appleseed in North Carolina:
- 21 shooting clinics held (25m, Known Distance, Pistol, and Rifleman Boot Camps)
- 3 Libertyseed events helped spread the word about the history and the program
- 300 shooters participated (with more spaces available in December!)
- 25 North Carolina instructors volunteered
- 14 new Instructors-In-Training and 3 new Applecore members stepped up to join the cadre
- 3 IIT's advanced to full instructor status and donned a red hat
And the best part? We still have another month left to go before the new year! |
"I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usupations."
James Madison

Short and sweet: That phrase applies to many aspects of life right now. The sun sets earlier and earlier in the evening...or is it the afternoon? But the days are busy with friends and family wishing each other well and preparing for presents, parties, and time to snuggle up inside. Brief hours of warm sunlight are especially appreciated now that the chill of winter has visited. Children enjoy a holiday parade or school winter concerts. And, of course, the date December 31 is skipping merrily towards us after hanging back on the far horizon of the calendar all year long.
Short and sweet can also apply to the breadth of our nation. It is natural to see pictures of the founders from the 1770's and feel that they were living in ancient times, far removed from us. But those 250 years span just ten or fewer human generations. It is not a terribly long reach back in time and imagination to put yourself among the men and women and children we describe at Appleseed events. It is our charge at Project Appleseed to ask all of our participants to carefully consider "What would you do if you were in their place?"
On the final day of the Constitutional Convention in 1787 Elizabeth Powel, a resident of Philadelphia, asked Benjamin Franklin as he emerged from a day of deliberations, "What have we got? A republic or a monarchy?" He replied, "A republic...if you can keep it!" Franklin might as well be looking you and me right in the eyes and issuing the same challenge today. The job of keeping our republic doesn't belong to the politicians or the military commanders in history books. If we are to keep America for another 250 years and beyond, the responsibility falls to each of us right here and right now. The Revolutionary War ended in 1783, but the American Revolution is an ongoing movement of personal liberty and self-government constantly evolving across a relatively young nation.
Stay informed, participate in your government with your voice and your vote, educate your friends and family, and nurture strong communities however you can. Freedoms only exist if you exercise them. Attending a Project Appleseed event is a great start, of course. Then take the lessons and skills you learn back home to your community. As you enjoy time with your friends and family this holiday season consider a moment of gratitude for those early Americans who set the experiment in motion and then handed it off to all of us.
I would love to hear from you any time with your thoughts and questions about Project Appleseed in North Carolina. My email address is NC@appleseedinfo.org.
