The new southbound overpass on 50 Street, between 90 Avenue and Sherwood Park Freeway, is now open to traffic. This marks the second major milestone for the 50 Street Widening and Railway Grade Separation project.
The addition of the southbound/northbound overpass eliminates the need for vehicles to wait at the railway crossing, improves the safe and efficient movement of people, goods and services, and significantly reduces traffic congestion in the area.
All southbound vehicular traffic has been moved to the new southbound overpass, opening three lanes of traffic in each direction. The northbound overpass was completed and opened in 2024, the first major milestone of the project.
Pedestrian access will remain on the west side of 50 Street at the existing at-grade railway crossing. The shared pathway on the northbound side and the sidewalk on the overpass are expected to be completed in 2026. The full project remains on track for completion by the end of 2026.
Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are reminded to follow all new signage and use caution while adjusting to the updated traffic pattern.
