With work to clear residential roadways nearing completion (87 per cent completed), the City of Edmonton will begin snow clearing and removal in Edmonton’s 3,000 cul-de-sacs on Thursday, January 22.
The cul-de-sac clearing process is expected to take up to six weeks, with crews active daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., including weekends. Cul-de-sac operations are completed in two phases: stacking removed snow, followed by removal. Stacking may occur several days prior to the removal and hauling.
Cul-de-sac clearing is a separate operation and is not part of the Citywide Phase 2 Residential Parking Ban. The majority of cul-de-sac work will be conducted after the Phase 2 parking ban is completed. The parking ban is currently expected to be lifted on Friday, January 23. Instead, localized parking restrictions will be used for cul-de-sac clearing; signage will be placed in individual cul-de-sacs in advance to notify residents when clearing will occur.
What residents can expect
The City is taking several measures to manage parking in cul-de-sacs during the clearing process:
- Large yellow temporary “no parking” signs will be placed at entrances of cul-de-sacs where heavy parking or access issues have been identified. In these locations, signs will be placed at least 24 hours before clearing begins.
- Crews will work to target areas that are able to be cleared and will wait for residents to move vehicles, if able, while in the area.
- For locations where “no parking” signs are placed, ticketing may occur 24 hours after signage is installed.
Edmontonians residing in cul-de-sacs are encouraged to continue parking their vehicles in driveways, garages or other residential street parking areas after the Phase 2 parking ban is completed. Removing vehicles from cul-de-sacs allows crews to work safely and efficiently.
Large snow piles may be present in the cul-de-sacs during this operation. Residents are advised to remain off the piles, as climbing on these mounds can carry various safety risks.
The City will issue another update on snow clearing later this week.
