Residential Roadways Parking Ban ends January 23 at 7 p.m.
January 23

The Phase 2 (Residential) Parking Ban in Edmonton will be lifted today – Friday, January 23 – at 7 p.m. As a result of this season’s extreme weather conditions, the ban was activated on January 12, to allow crews to address conditions on Edmonton’s 3,800 kilometres of residential roads. This work was completed within established service levels for Priority 4 (residential) roadways.

Even with this residential clearing completed, City crews continue to work 24 hours a day to address other priorities across Edmonton’s 12,000 kilometres of roadways. This includes addressing uneven conditions and traction concerns, as well as the clearing of cul-de-sacs, windrow-free areas in school zones, and alleyways.

The City thanks the teams who have been working around the clock since early December to clear its roadway and active pathway networks.

Cul-de-sac clearing
The City began the separate operation of snow clearing and removal in cul-de-sacs on January 22. This work is expected to take up to six weeks. This process is not part of the citywide Phase 2 Residential Parking Ban and involves two stages: first, stacking the cleared snow, then removing it. Stacking may occur several days prior to removal and hauling. Crews will be active daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., including weekends. Localized parking restrictions will be in effect when crews are present, with large yellow temporary "No Parking" signs placed at cul-de-sac entrances at least 24 hours before clearing begins. Ticketing may occur 24 hours after the signage is installed. Residents are encouraged to park in driveways, garages or other available residential streets to allow crews to work safely and efficiently. In addition to these signs, the public will continue to be updated through public service announcements and social media channels.

School zone clearing
Crews are actively working to address the windrow-free sections of school zones throughout Edmonton. The clearing and removal of windrows in the 317 school zones started on January 16 and is anticipated to be completed by February 2. To minimize disruption to the school schedule and ensure safe operations, this work is occurring overnight on weekdays and at all hours on weekends.

Windrows
The City does not remove windrows along standard residential roadways.  Windrows are removed by the City in the following situations:
  • At corner crosswalks.
  • At driveway entrance points (when windrow is greater than 30 centimetres).
  • In designated windrow-free areas around schools.
Windrows that are in front of driveways but less than 30 centimetres are the responsibility of the adjacent property owner.

Sidewalks
Property owners and residents are reminded to continue clearing sidewalks adjacent to their properties after every snowfall. Your cooperation ensures improved accessibility for your community, front-line workers and people with mobility challenges. If, as a result of residential roadway clearing, residents experience windrows that encroach on sidewalks by 50 centimetres or more, they are encouraged to contact 311.

Enforcement
As of January 20, enforcement officers have issued over 3,402 tickets and 176 warnings. Ticketing is ongoing, and final numbers will be available after the parking ban has concluded. For more information about how to pay or dispute your ticket, visit the City’s website.

311
Upon the conclusion of the Phase 2 parking ban, 311 will resume accepting notifications for residential road snow-clearing requests. Residents are asked to report winter road concerns through 311, as it helps identify trends, coordinate responses and ensure the most efficient service delivery. Residents will be able to submit a request online anytime, or by phone Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  City crews will assess and address concerns in priority order, based on safety and accessibility.

Edmontonians can subscribe to Service Notifications and receive email or text messages specific to their address. Notifications are sent when future parking bans are activated and as roadway work is scheduled, in progress and completed.
